MOHINDER SINGH – a Brief Biography. Dr. Avtar Singh Ph.d
Mohinder Singh is a classically trained tabla maestro of the first order. He is a disciple of the legendary master Ajit Singh Mutlashi. Mohinder was born and brought up in Birmingham (United Kingdom) and has made unprecedented strides in bringing his instrument to a global audience. From a very young age he started performing with westernised Asian bands; by the age of eighteen he had completed many successful international tours. Being brought up in a multi-cultural city such as Birmingham, his music has been inevitably inspired by the rich and diverse musical styles he has been exposed to; this is exemplified by his wide ranging musical collaborations with artistes such as Peter Gabriel, Darius Brubeck, Anand Shankar, Dave O’Higgins, Durga Arya Kruger, Akram Khan, Mavin Khoo, Kepa Junkera, Dan Crary and Ustade Fateh Ali.
Most recently Mohinder Singh has been touring extensively with Pandit Shalil Shankar, a senior disciple of the legendary Pandit Ravi Shankar, and together they have performed in prestigious venues and festivals around the globe.
In 2003, the duo, Mohinder and Shalil were invited by the President of Chile to play at a tribute concert for the former President Allende and the much loved folk singer, Victor Jara; they were watched and applauded by over 70,000 people.
In 2004, the duo completed a very successful tour of South America; 18 concerts in Uruguay and Argentina. They were invited by Argentinean’s most loved tango guitarist, Luis Salinas, to perform a concert in the capital, Buenos Aires. In May 2006 they completed a very successful tour of Mexico, playing in the prestigious venue of Balas Art in Mexico City.
his collaboration of tabla and tango guitar playing was loved by all, and they received a standing ovation and great reviews from the press; what is more a beautiful relationship has been built winning the hearts of the music lovers of Argentina.
For many years Mohinder has devoted his time and experience to educational work in England and abroad, delivering Work Shops and giving lectures/demonstrations, in different environments, from beginners to more experienced musicians with all musical backgrounds and cultures.
Mendi is currently recording and performing his new album, "Master and Disciple" featuring Yelitza, Sykes, Naomi Mighty, Carvalho, HoneyTones and a selection of Birminghams finest soloists. The album covers a wide range of dance and urban music genres and is due for release early next year.

Hey Mendi, Finally played 'The Bell' to the kids at school (had a few technicals wit the CD!) They love it!!I have made copies of their comments and will leave them with Paul. You were right about the length (mainly the boys commented on that) There was a tabla player amongst the audience too - he loved every minute! But overall, some very positive feedback from a very young audience! Think you may have a new set of fans !
