PEENI WAALI is jamaican patois and stands for the scarabae known as "firefly" (Cucujos in spanish, ClipClip in malaysian, Glowworm in central Europe etc.), a symbol of hope. This beacon of light, hope & trust became the logo for our little label of love, our musical platform. Musically wide-spread, we produce without commercial concessions which
leaves enough freedom to record a great variety of different music:
music from homo sapiens to sapiens.
When people don't understand our music, they call it "Jazz"...
Some of our music has been associated with "world music" although we'd
rather emphasize than standardise on the differences in cultural styles...
We prefer the term "New World Music" hopefully pointing to new music...
To bring people from different worlds - with apparently little in common
- together within one project, reunite mankind rather than just reunite
one community only, making an effort to understand different visions,
backrounds, ethics; creating the envy to be drawn to the magic of "just
music" sure is a rejoycing challenge of energy, common-sense,
awareness, flexibility, humbleness, courtesy, provocation and humour!...
Exchange being the order of the day... not so much "who hires who"...:
some artist arrives, a feast is to happen, the artist leaves, a great
time's been behind - and some traces remain as music...
The Mensch 'Hide-Out' continuously welcomes outstanding visits and it's always a pleasure to host such fine people as Linton Kwesi Johnson, Alan Kushan, Rico Rodriguez, Dennis Bovell, Steve Gregory, Hubert Osterwalder, Lars Hollmer (R.I.P.) or the wonderful and great Barbara Dennerlein to name but a few...
The challenge of relating to all these genuine people, making music, colouring, flavouring and assembling all sorts of elements in a single concept is one big gratifiying treat.

We're fond of having cool visits gracing many Mensch recordings with genuine guest-apearances such as drummer extraordinaire Horsemouth Wallace, Lee Scratch Perry, Taj Mahal, Georgie Fame, Robbie Shakespeare, John Kpiaye, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Tobias Morgenstern, Bolot & Nohon, Johnny T., Betty Legler, Roland Schiltknecht and his posse... and yet still other great players. Even musicians that were never here, became dear collaborators through the technical/electronical means of today, e.g. Morgan Fisher or the fine bassplayer Matt Weeks.
