About me:
Announcing Publication of Men and Feminism (Seal Press)!
What people are saying about Men and Feminism —
Just by posing the question — can men be feminists? — Shira Tarrant launches a vital conversation.
-Michael Kimmel, author of
Guyland
Using men's voices, Tarrant's engaging and innovative book reminds us that feminism isn't just for women.
-CJ Pascoe, author of
Dude, You're a Fag
The idea that feminism is anti-male is one of the great misunderstandings of our time . . . Tarrant's reader-friendly style gives voice to men across the racial/ethnic and sexual orientation spectrum who grapple with questions about difference between responsibility and guilt, as well as the benefits and burdens of privilege.
-Jackson Katz, author of
The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help
What people are saying about Men Speak Out —
Men Speak Out is a collection of 39 essays by men who [share] the visions they bring, the questions they have, and the challenges with which they wrestle.
—Keely Savoie, Bitch magazine
This book is where it's at: showcasing men who not only get it, but also get it right.
—Mandy Van Deven, Feminist Review
The collection of essays — written by men, about men — [is] very personal, easy to read, and down to earth.
—Byron Hurt, director Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes
Nothing short of groundbreaking.
—Allison McCarthy,
Girlistic.com
This is important validation for men trapped in the masculine construct…and for all the trannies and queers who negotiate these issues.
—Inga Muscio, author of Cunt: A Declaration of Independence
Men Speak Out is an important addition to the growing body of work exploring men’s crucial role in the fight for gender justice.
—Lisa Jervis, founding editor and publisher of Bitch: Feminist Response to Pop Culture
[This] can only be sign of better things to come for all of us.
—Daily Hernandez, co-editor of Colonize This!
This is an important book… to savor, discuss, and share with our sons and daughters.
—Michael A. Messner, Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies, University of Southern California
Not too long ago, a friend of a friend joking-aggressively asked me while we were out and about what the difference between misogyny and sex is… Lucky for me, Shira Tarrant put together a wonderful anthology of men’s views of feminism called Men Speak Out … and you’ll be gratified to know that … the men in this volume understand the distinctions very easily.
—Amanda Marcotte,
Pandagon.net
Feminism is a dirty word. It conjures images of whiny, bitchy women with smug complaints about men. And the men who call themselves one? If they aren’t simply whipped, then it’s a cheap ploy at getting laid … Or so the story goes. Fortunately, there are new voices and views on the scene!
This one-of-a-kind anthology is hailed for asking sharp questions about negotiating the masculinity trap. Join the lively discussion about sexuality, identity, and men’s crucial role in the fight for progressive change.

Observe and Report — Are We Done Yet?
Apparently not. Seth Rogen’s latest film includes yet another rape scene under the guise of “harmless fun” or “just” entertainment. It’s neither. . . .

I have been very active in Domestic Violence causes all of my adult life. I noticed a need in the world pertaining to Same Sex Domestic Violence. It happens more than people know. Unfortunately there are a number of gay people who barely consider themselves worthy or valued as a gay person much less a Domestic Violence Victim. There are also very limited resources, statistics, or information, for Same Sex Domestic Violence. Hopefully through empowerment and education we can change some of this. :D

Today, July 9 at 7pm (PST) join your hosts Christene Kings and Melissa Chiprin for another fiercely independent edition of Feminist Magazine.
First meet the “Hoop Girls,” just fresh from their rave review run at CASA 0101 in Boyle Heights. The play that asks ….
Which Hoop Are You?
Hoop Girls Will Break It Down. From baby's first hoops, to the angst-ridden teen's brazen 4 inch hoops, to the 3 inch "household hoops"-filled with memories, hoop earrings are symbols of the stages of womanhood and how we are all wonderfully connected.
Joining us from the ensemble cast is Jesse Bliss, Julie Evans, Ramona Gonzales, Esperanza Ibarra, Karla Menjivar, Miriam Moses and writer/co-producer Gabriela Lopez.
Later, Marina Wood, Erin Nakamura, Erin Hale, and Alaina Chamberlain from Women’s Studies Student Association, (WSSA), at CSULB who are devoted to the empowerment of women through education and the development of the feminist identity. Will be featuring a workshop they presented at the L.A. Social Forum. “It Takes A Village To Rape A Woman,” which explores the link between masculinities and violence against women. Framing violence against women as a men's issue and provide possible solutions.
And, Cyn Da’ Poet- Cyn stretches her talent not only as poet and performer but, also as organizer and host of events that allow others to showcase their work. She is currently working on her first book, and is experimenting with incorporating music into her poems in hopes of developing a new genre. Tonight Cyn will be talking about her upcoming event “Evolucion De Culturas.”
Today, July 9, at 7 pm (PST), on KPFK’s, “Feminist Magazine Radio Show,” heard on 90.7 fm, Los Angeles, 98.
7 fm, Santa Barbara and streaming live and archived at kpfk. org.
