Ways to Get Involved

Volunteer

Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the easiest and most rewarding things you’ll ever do in your life. For more info, please visit www.bbbsmt.org/volunteer

Join an Event

We have several fund-raising events held each year, and we need committee members as well as participants.

Jack in the Box Bowl for Kids' Sake
March - September

Grab some friends and put together a team in our bowl-a-thon event, Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The “bowl-a-thon” is where participants secure pledges in advance through their personal network including friends, coworkers and neighbors and come out to have a good time bowling. Nationally, Bowl for Kids’ Sake is Big Brothers Big Sisters primary fundraising event. Opportunities for corporate and individual participation include groups of friends, coworkers or even church groups forming bowling teams. Companies can also sponsor the event. Sponsorships range from $250 to $50,000. Visit www.bbbsmt.org/events/bowl.

Team Rio
January - April

Are you a runner or walker, or wanting to be? Join Team Rio and train with our group to run or walk the Country Music Half Marathon.

Celebrity captains from country music group Diamond Rio motivate and join runners and walkers in group training now through April. The group follows individual training guidelines for the half marathon throughout the week - and then meets for group runs on the weekends. Each runner is asked to raise $250 in pledges for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Team Rio provides a chance for businesses to sponsor a high profile group in the highly anticipated Country Music Marathon. Corporate sponsorships range from $1,000-$50,000. For more info, visit www.bbbsmt.org/events/team_rio.

Arby's Charity Tour
October

The Arby’s Charity Tour is definitely for the corporate golf enthusiast. A day of premiere golf, fabulous trophies and a networking event like none other, this first class tournament will highlight businesses with some of the most influential companies anywhere. Sponsorships range from $500 to $25,000 – and a foursome in the tournament begins at $3,000. For more info, visit www.bbbsmt.org/events/arbyscharitytour.

Franklin Wine Festival
October

Each fall we have a wine and food tasting – the Franklin Wine Festival, where we need volunteers to pour wine as well as people to buy tickets to come out and enjoy. Attendees join together at the Factory in Franklin to sample wines from all over the world as well as celebrate cuisine, culture, and support Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The event includes a fabulous Vintner’s Dinner, and a silent and live auction. Wine and food enthusiasts will particularly enjoy attending this event and businesses will be equally pleased highlighting their support of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Sponsorships range from $500 to $25,000.

For more info, visit www.bbbsmt.org/events/franklinwinefestival.

Breakfast with Big Brothers Big Sisters
November

A casual, informative breakfast gathering of newcomers and supporters that come together to learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters. Businesses sponsoring this event will be spotlighted amongst many of Middle Tennessee’s most influential civic leaders. Sponsorships range from $1,000 to $20,000. For more info, visit www.bbbbsmt.org/events/breakfast.

Donate

Naturally, we wouldn’t turn down a donation to help us serve more children.

If you’d like to make a secure online donation, visit www.bbbsmt.org/donate or call us at (615) 329-9191 ext. 224.

Music

Love to play the guitar, or enjoy singing in the choir at church? We probably have a Little Brother or Sister waiting who enjoys those very same things. Visit www.mentorakid.org and get started.

We are honored to have Diamond Rio as National Ambassadors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and tremendous supporters of us locally. Their latest album, “The Reason,” encourages listeners to support Big Brothers Big Sisters.

MoviesAn outing with your future Little Brother or Sister can be as simple as going to see a movie together and then talking about what parts you liked best. Why not call us today - (615) 329-9191.
Television

We all have favorites and enjoy many of today’s current shows.

One of the challenges we face is getting kids to be more active and exercise. The majority of our children are from single-parent or grand-parent led homes, and the unfortunate reality is that without an additional positive role model to help encourage to get out and get active, they will watch 40 hours of television a week.

Books

A trip to the library is a great activity for you and your Little.

One of the great things about Big Brothers Big Sisters is that the professional social work staff takes care and great attention to matching you with a child that with which you share a common interest. If you love to read books and enjoy quiet time, we find a child that would blend with those personality traits. If you’re a sports lover and want someone to go play ball with, then you are matched with a child who also enjoys throwing the ball around.

Some suggested reading if you’re considering becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister and would like to see some other view points:

Talking about the power of a mentor:
“Stand By Me” by Jean E. Rhodes

We offer one mentoring program specifically for children of prisoners, the Amachi program. The sad reality is that without intervention, these children most at peril face a 70% likelihood that they will follow their parents behind bars.

Some suggested reading on this topic:
“All Alone in the World” by Nel Bernstein
“Doing Time on the Outside” by Donald Braman

Heroes

Our heroes are those folks that choose to step up and volunteer to make a difference in a child’s life. Choose to get involved with our agency by giving of your time, your talent, or your treasure – but please get involved today! Visit www.mentorakid.org.

Be a Friend.
Be a Mentor.
Just Be There.

About me:

Founded in 1969, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee makes a positive difference in the lives of children by providing a one-to-one mentor to a child in need. In 2008, we served over 2,200 children throughout Middle Tennessee with an additional positive adult role model in their lives.

Right now, we have over 200 children waiting for a mentor in their lives – over two thirds of which are boys. We especially need African American men to volunteer, as the majority of our waiting boys are African American.

Who I'd like to meet:

Caring adults who would like make a difference in the life of a child.

It only takes about an hour a week to positively impact a child’s future. It’s easy to do! Your time together could be working on a school assignment, playing ball in the park, or baking a batch of cookies and talking about your day. It’s these simple little moments of friendship that cause big magic in the life of a child.
