What they said...
Toots Thielemans “S.Mercier is a musician in constant evolution, as a player and as a composer”.
Mike Zwerin (International Herald Tribune) “...kind of like Lee Konitz with an edge of Dolphy...good time, great sound, wonderful melodic sense and really knows how to listen”.
Asim Memon (allaboutjazz.com) : “...an emerging innovator in contemporary jazz”.
François Louis (worldclass instrument maker) : “Beautiful lines with emotion and inspiration, and wonderful evolution in developing tools for expression”.

Saxophonist Stephane Mercier has lived in Brussels, Boston (92-95), New York (95-02) and Paris (02-04), playing with numerous musicians and bands in various styles.
As a student at the Berklee College of Music, he already gained the experience of getting awards (Downbeat magazine, Berklee itself,...), touring, and signing record deals.
His album Flor de Luna (year 2000-FSNT097), recorded in NY and produced by the great Barcelonian label Fresh Sound/New Talent, was released worldwide and acclaimed by the press.
Other experiences led him to record at Birdland for the house label with the Magali Souriau Orchestra (featuring Chris Cheek, Jeff Ballard, Aaron Goldberg, Dennis Irwin,...), or tour and play the NY scene with the new generation (Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Avishai Cohen(tr), Bill McHenry, Miguel Zenon,...).
Stephane lately settled down in Europe, where he raises his family and leads different projects, ranging from acoustic duo to electronic live dub jazz and plays as a sideman for many groups (lead alto of the Jazz Station Big Band and the New Sadi Big Band,...)
The Metronome magazine in China featured last year his electronic jazz in a compilation that introduced European artists to the continent, and speaking of China, a new compilation named "JazzOlympics" enjoys a worldwide distribution under the Olympic flag, and features S.Mercier next to Toots Thielemans, Philip Catherine, Jef Neve, etc...
He also takes part of the starting team of a brand new jazz school in Brussels (www.jazzbxl.be). His last album "Walking the Soul Map" (Mogno J031) was released on March 21st 2009 and features the cream of the Belgian jazz scene (Charles Loos,...).
Not from the stars do I my judgment pluck, And yet methinks I have astronomy; But not to tell of good or evil luck, Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons' quality; Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell, Pointing to each his thunder, rain, and wind, Or say with princes if it shall go well By oft predict that I in heaven find.
But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive, And, constant stars, in them I read such art As truth and beauty shall together thrive If from thyself to store thou wouldst convert: Or else of thee this I prognosticate, Thy end is truth's and beauty's doom and date.
Bonsoir Stephane, Grand merci de m'ajouter parmis vos amis musiciens de MySpace . Votre musique est superbe ! J'aime particulièrement bien votre sax phrasing ainsi que votre somptueux SON d'Alto Sax . Passez une excellente semaine . Amitiés Alexis
