In the world of hip hop music, there are three schools of thought... Old School, New School, and TRUE SCHOOL.
Merc Versus. The artist that holds this title is only a representation of the greater movement... The culmination of this individual's musical ability and philosophical depth are manifested via his moving scores and compositions. Merc Versus is without a doubt one of the most unique members of the hip-hop nation based in the state of Indiana. Selections such as "You Know" and "Lust" attest to this fact. Merc Versus is currently poised to release "The Word", his full-length debut album. THE MUSIC SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. On 5-17-07 The Word shall be heard!
Merc Versus has performed at a variety of venues including FN Music, Stevie Ray's House of Wax, Olympus, the Chug, the Locker Room, MT Cup, the Blue Bottle, the Tally (Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana), Fast Breaks, Doc's Nightclub, 909 Grille, Center Stage (Muncie, Indiana), Rehearsal Studios, Sugar Shack, Emerson Theatre, Corner Pocket, Tip Top Tavern, Spin Nightclub (Indianapolis, Indiana), the Hot Spot, City Grille, Second Story (Bloomington, Indiana), Matter Park (Marion, Indiana), Kaysan's 5th Down, O'Sullivan's Irish Pub, Miss Q's Music Complex, The Brass Rail (Fort Wayne, Indiana), and Bernie's Distillery (Columbus, Ohio), several rave parties throughout Indiana, and various other locations. Merc Versus has shared the stage with such renowned underground talents from the midwest as Capital D/All Natural/Daily Plannet (Chicago, Illinois), Atlantic recording artist Twista (Chicago, Illinois), One Be Lo/Subterraneous Crew (Pontiac Michigan), Code Red (Louisville, Kentucky), Mab Lab, Origin@l, and Mudkids (Indianapolis, Indiana), as well as hip hop legend Canibus.
In the Village section of Muncie, Indiana's own Ball State University Merc Versus played an integral part in the nurturing and development of the local hip hop community by organizing and promoting a series of showcase functions and events collectively known as MCP Live Mic Nite, which astonished fans attended by the hundreds. These important events, up to four hours in length, featured a live DJ, local talent showcase, and emcee battles. Merc Versus was introduced to the world of journalism during his semi-regular (albeit potent) contributions to local press in the form of his monthly columns in the Star Press-published Jar (in which he appeared with his group Mystery School in a February 2000 cover story) and All Access newspapers in Muncie, Indiana.
Merc Versus also received critical acclaim in Indianapolis' Nuvo magazine (Nuvo journalist Steve Hammer described his group Mystery School's 1999 "When U Get High" CD single as 'a masterwork' in the March 2000 full-page article), the now-defunct national hip hop publication known as Blaze, and a number of websites, among them the Indiana-based ShotgunReviews.com (where in the Lyrical Lounge Interviews archive Johnathan "J-Ice" Birdsong says: 'No aspiring emcee impressed us more with their knowledge and passion of hip hop culture than...Indiana's favorite son'). In 2001, a Ball State University Telecommunications Major undertook a 2-piece video project "Mosque of Mysteries"/"Adversary". These films both featured Merc Versus, the first being an extended interview with performance clips and the second a full-length music video. (which was televised on a PBS show highlighting T-Comm student projects). It was during this time that Merc Versus began to regularly appear on numerous weekly underground hip hop shows on the campus radio station, WCRD 91.3 FM, to promote Mystery School's music...
