"When the time comes, perhaps a hundred years from now, to tally up achievements in the performing arts during the last third of the 20th century, one name that seems sure to loom large is that of Meredith Monk. In originality, in scope, in depth, there are few to rival her." -- The Washington Post
This official Meredith Monk myspace page is operated by colleagues at Boosey & Hawkes with input and collaboration from the composer herself. Special thanks to ECM Records for permission to stream these tracks! Enjoy!
Meredith Monk has singlehandedly pioneered an entire genre of musical expression * Beginning with the vocal techniques she discovered in the mid-1960s, Monk's work soon came to incorporate theatrical elements, movement, and a poetic sensibility that is at once contemporary and utterly timeless * Has created more than 100 works in genres ranging from vocal solo and ensemble concerts to opera, film, recordings, and site-specific pieces * Since 1980 her music has been released on the ECM New Series label * Received a MacArthur Foundation "Genius" Award in 1995 * Was honored with a three-concert retrospective by Lincoln Center Festival 2000.
"...intensely moving, drop-dead gorgeous can't-be-categorized fluid piece of meditative music..."
-- Mark Swed, Los Angeles Times
"...a multitude of visual and sonic wonders... spellbinding..."
--Jack Anderson, The New York Times
"...Monk conjures up a spectrum of colorful and evocative sounds from her one-of-a-kind vocal instrument."
-- Donald Rosenberg, The Plain Dealer
