“A flower is always a flower wherever in the world it grows. It always represents the same figure and it adapts to the environment that surrounds it without changing its meaning in life. It only changes the process of growth and the time it takes to flourish.”
- Merlinmoon

For nearly a quarter century, a musician laid dormant in the recesses of the mind and body of Alex Deep. Spinning records in Venezuela, and then surrendering to familial expectations of higher ed in Boston, the musician remained buried beneath the surface. Although, dreams are powerful guides possessing the wisdom of 100 philosophy books in a single second of R.E.M. And when the mythical wizard Merlin, reflected in the ocean by the pale moon’s light, summons you to manifest your passions in an un-ending series of dreams, it doesn’t take magic to know where your destiny lies. And so from the depths of despair, the musician Merlinmoon a.k.a. Alex Deep...rose.

Alex always expected to be an artist, but his family had different plans. The 24 year-old began his musical career in Venezuela as a DJ, discovering and sharing music like the preeminent currency. On the rise in the underground music scene, Deep would curtail his upward trajectory to honor a family tradition of earning a college degree – so he traded South America to studying at Boston University.

Alex crammed four years of school into three, enrolling in summer school courses to graduate a year early. Against the wishes of his family and friends, namely his mother and girlfriend, Alex refused to abandon music entirely, taking piano lessons and practicing up to four hours each night. In his darkest moments, as the pressures from his family got the best of him and he contemplated selling his equipment and giving up, surreal visions began to beckon from his sleep. The wizard Merlin became his trusty nocturnal guide, appearing cast in the glow of the moon’s light. In nights of desperation Merlin returned, waving his wand in the direction of his greatest passion—a piano at the edge of the sand where the surf breaks. Years later, Alex would assume the moniker Merlinmoon to honor these dreams.

When one of his close friends died in a tragic motorcycle accident during his penultimate year of college, Alex realized there are no certainties in life and it can all end without a moment’s notice. Angered and confused at the loss of youth, Alex channeled his overwhelming grief into crafting music and a philosophy book that he was writing for school. Upon reading the first draft of the tome, his professor instructed him to travel around the world to gain perspective and revisit the work when he returned.

Prior to embarking on this journey toward self discovery, Alex completed the demo songs he had written. Attributing the tracks to his alias Merlinmoon, Alex fled Boston for the world at large. Spending months at a time in Mexico City, Miami, New York and Rome, he continued to work on his philosophy book when he got a call from a producer in Boston who heard his demo songs and wanted to enter the studio to refine the tracks.

Merlinmoon finished his first EP Poppy Fields in Boston and soon moved to Los Angeles to work on his full-length debut with producer Ronan Chris Murphy. The result is the unabashedly epic, Stoned By Dreams, which mines the stars for inspiration and the grand design of life for truths. The music is psychedelic-electro-rock to be performed in arenas for fans that listen to albums through headphones. The opus of the album, “Days of Rage Into the Light” clocks in at nearly 20 minutes and is layered deeply with sounds reminiscent of Pink Floyd that are sobered by Merlinmoon’s philosophy, before an upbeat coda returns the song to a celebratory climax. One can picture Merlinmoon as a whirling dervish onstage, entrancing the audience to follow his path. Other songs, like “If I Could Be the Wind”, “Fall Into Place”, and “Under Next Year’s Sun” deal with love and loss in a more straightforward song structure. The themes may be familiar to fans of classic rock, but the direction that Merlinmoon takes the songs is more cerebral. He wants you to listen to the philosophy in his lyrics as well as the guitar solos and lush instrumentation that round out the music, which is always recorded in analog on vintage gear to capture the magic of ’70s rock.

“This record has a great equilibrium between my philosophy and my life,” says Merlinmoon. “I know what I want to listen to in a record, and I don’t want the record to be talking about the same thing because it would be like a day without a night, a flat rollercoaster without excitement. Given that I listen to ’70s rock and electronic music, I learned to appreciate concept albums and realized that my message both in music and philosophy could be presented as one piece of art. I named the record Stoned By Dreams because that is how I live life; it’s about living everyday to the fullest – following your dreams. Dreams are the closest connection to our own consciousness, being able to live that dream of fantasy. My hope for this album is that it gives people the courage to wake up and start living.”

In addition to his concept album, Merlinmoon has already written songs for a tribute album to the friend he lost, and the soundtrack to a film he is writing.

Merlinmoon confesses, “I have a disease where I can’t stop writing.” The purpose for this outpouring of work is simple – he hopes to free the chains in people’s minds and at this pace, it’s just a question of time.

The Band

Recently, Alex has been joined by guitar virtuoso Johann Frank as a permanent addition to the project. At age 20, Johann has already established himself as a world-class musician, playing with a dizzying array of famous artists, up to and including Earth, Wind and Fire, Steve Winwood, Phil Collins and Steve Howe. Johann, a guitar player since age 9, was discovered at 14 by Collins as part of his “Little Dreams Foundation” program that works to discover young talent and help them achieve their artistic goals. Johann took a “leap of faith,” in his words, last June, when he flew to Venezuela with Alex to play as part of Merlinmoon – despite the fact the two barely knew each other. “I’ve been looking for a project outside of playing with the big names that I could really believe in,” says Johann, “and this is it. Alex made an immediate impression on me with his philosophy, and I love his album. I believe that we can do something really important and uplifting for the world with his music.”

Merlinmoon - Free people from enslaved minds

“A flower is always a flower wherever in the world it grows. It always represents the same figure and it adapts to the environment that surrounds it without changing its meaning in life. It only changes the process of growth and the time it takes to flourish”

Part I – In search of the light

The men of the great assembly rule with great wisdom, in which the world is maintained, with pure kindness among people. We should let the fear of heaven guide our senses and define our will. Life is a powerful vacuum, in which our power of will defines our destiny.

Why do harm? Why cause suffering? Why do we need to break laws of nature in order to seek false happiness through selfishness, just for personal satisfaction? With this behavior so prevalent, death becomes interesting because life is too painful. Try to imagine how to dramatize the nakedness of suffering. Only in a dream of innocence can this be seen; only in sleep are we sheltered from the power of humiliation. Therefore if I harm, I should suffer without compassion. I should pay for the healing of hearts that mankind poisons, because if I dare to hurt someone, the thought alone should injure my consciousness.

Only the Prince of Heaven can set us free and let us live in peace, respecting the natural laws from which temptation leads us astray. We stand upon the authorities of kings and distinguish ourselves by the moral principles of loving, caring, for one another, and adoring and worshiping God. We are not afraid to worship what we are to become, and we endure the process in order to find the visible light of truth, the door to salvation, and to a restored world where everybody has the same right to be unique and successful in their own way. If we believe in this cause, it is the only chance we have to raise the visibility of the empire of divinity, erasing the fact that the forbidden fruit caused our fall from grace, planting in fertile soil millions of seeds, that won’t come into this world in order to suffer.

It all seems like an illusion of dry tears in the horizon, where the prism of red flames was seen for the first time without knowledge of what it meant. The light of a single candle inspired and illuminated the mind that brought meaning to this illusion, with the mission to lead millions of others onto the path of a new beginning, where life would be informed by an ideology based only in three things: love, joy and companionship.

Part II – We are what we are

The need to be around people starts when one cannot be in silence. Humans adapt to any situation the world presents upon them. It is crucial to understand that oneself comes before anything else when confidence is lost. This act cannot be called selfishness because in such a state there is nothing to give that will bring some sense to a puzzle with no picture.

The long journey rises by listening to the whispers of the heart; only the heart can decide which road to take. Patience with time will be part of the tough quest. If one’s mind succeeds in the search it attains life itself, and one has learned to accept and love all the faults and gifts that God has placed in our hands. Believe in equilibrium, for it is the main principle of nature. No fault exists without a gift that balances the equation; it is just a matter of identifying each of them, and being aware of the changes that sunsets and sunrises may bring to us with every experience lived.

Then the thought of loving others comes like a wave that washes over the mind. In a glimpse the world seems better, just by the fact that humans differ in their views of the world. If people were seen by what they are and not what they represent or what they are expected to be, it would be as easy for mankind to grow a just and peaceful world as it is for the soil to grow sinless apples. Nature wants fruits to be fruits and flowers to simply be flowers. If a pineapple desired to be an orchid, nature would not be so purely integrated. This doesn’t mean that the gift of holding a mind with which to think makes humans less happy or purposeful than a simple fruit waiting to be devoured in the saw of someone’s teeth.

Life doesn’t expect anything from people; on the contrary, humans expect too much of life, missing the beauty of living life by taking simple steps. Every step taken forward changes the image of the expected reward to a greater and better form. This principle helps understand the foundation of humans’ relationships with themselves.

Mankind, in the struggle for survival, searches for better days, a life in bliss, and the reward of making progress. It is a feeling that is understood only when it happens. When it does happen the time of being self-centered and selfish drowns in the sea of weakness. Others will still be engaged in the quest, and only time will make them understand that egocentricity is something nature gave mankind as weapon of survival. Only then can their minds comprehend reality; and only then will they encounter whatever the world has prepared for them.

Hundreds of things occur daily that may define one’ purpose; it only depends on the naked vision to find them and identify the importance they deserve. The mind is a sponge, a perfect machine that never fails to engage the issues that demand it’s attention. Through the soul’s heart the message is sent in a whisper. If the neural note is heard, the small voice succeeds in leading the will to new knowledge.

Part III – The purpose

Not everything learned makes a difference in the world. The ability to make a difference does not come from the knowledge gained, but rather from the way that it is learned. Peace of mind cannot be given randomly to people, because this would open doorways not meant for everyone, resulting in confusion. In fact it is given by nature for a purpose, to follow the heart and do what seems correct at any point in time. In that way what has been learned can be applied correctly to life, thus improving by trial and error.

Peace of mind comes from within the heart, and it is felt when both feet stand upon the right choice, thus clearing the path to the road that must be taken. There are many highways for millions of different people making diverse choices, and who have the opportunity to melt ideas and build roads not yet discovered.

The memory of the mind is more sensitive when young. It records faster and more accurately the inflow of life through the senses. The connection of the inflow to life varies, in a function that determines the time in which the mind will either retain knowledge, or erase it faster than it was temporarily recorded. Logic and reason are weapons that all minds possess, enabling them to tattoo in permanent ink everything understood, and to change one's course and direction toward a more direct road to mental peace.

Seconds become minutes, hours become days, days become years, and still the visible is hidden to eyes that prefer to be blind. The pattern of events record history in its natural form, in which humans are matter and flesh, born not knowing from whence they came or by whom they were created. Profound reason through the ages has taught that all thoughts wasted in order to understand the origin of life should become free from the rules of the conscious, to save energy and encourage pure faith. Every action defines a person's identity, but only if the action is taken by one who stands on pure ground, believing that it was the right choice at the right time. Pure actions require that the soul should, for the benefit of humanity, avoid conflict with those who close their eyes and feel their existence fading away with time. The clock is ticking, and the only teachings that penetrate existence with steel-like strength are the ones that lead straight to companionship, love and joy and are created by the interaction between the heart, the soul and life as a whole.

Books offer the ideas of great minds, and stories by brilliant authors, but every idea reflects differently in every innocent eye. For this reason life repeats events over and over, to make people aware of the mistakes that others have made. Gaining knowledge is not a matter of being tested, because life itself is a test. The art of patience through reason is the key to control emotions in the purest form, and to understand that freedom has limits, but is wide enough to appear infinite to the naked eye. Experiences mark life with scars that shine in every mirror, and help us to avoid repeating our errors. Only experience can broaden the path towards knowledge, and, with the passing of time, expand the life of matter and flesh into a deeper and healthier state of mind.

Part IV– Mistakes without reason

Mistakes are made without the intention of doing something wrong. Children play with fire, and explore from every angle anything that they see, trying to understand and identify life in their pure and innocent way. A match seems magical in their tiny eyes, because they don’t know that oxygen at high temperature becomes fuel and the match is just a trigger. Children see the danger, of course, is only when it hurts, empowering the sense of fear.

The right and wrong of things cannot be taught in a straightforward manner. This only prepares the mind for a future experience. When humans don’t know the why of things, curiosity drives them to find answers. Parents overprotect their kids, and discourage the freedom of inquisitiveness that children have by nature. The instinct that pushed humans to learn how to smash rocks into tools, still leads them to explore life, making mistakes with each and every breath.

Every action, whether right or wrong has a purpose to be learned, and each consequence occurs for a reason, which the mind needs time to digest. Sometimes the mind is not aware that it is looking down the barrel of the gun. Life will take the responsibility to loop mistakes infinite times until one can accept the reason for whatever has occurred, and grow from the experience.

In contrast, learning as a result of punishment only represses a person into a state of mind near entropy, resulting in an insecure peace of mind, not far from the road traveled only by lost souls. Not every one is to be blamed; its not always one’s fault if one does not know that the train is moving to the wrong direction. However sometimes it is known, and yet nothing is done to change direction or to seek help. Awareness is a great gift which God has placed in the instincts of living creatures, to guide everyone closer to the brighter light.

Part V- Time

Time sets points in space to draw lines between paths. If time would measure distance, humanity’s happiness would be endless. We would be looking back at all the steps taken in different directions without thinking of the time that each step took. If people can liberate their minds from their old ideas about age and time, and every second will feel like the last, and people will feel more power to live and breathe, though unconscious of the reason.

Life is a rollercoaster that goes up and down, making some times harder than others, in order to encourage our instincts to become stronger for survival, and to enable our minds to mature with experience. Time changes everything in the world. Looking back in time, we see that the relative change in the world as a whole is bigger than the pictures held in our memories, because the mind adapts as days pass. With time the world will change faster, because with each passing day people are less aware of what they want.

The constant search for something that is not there makes the world a place of ideas floating in entropy, in which people struggle to find an identity. During the sixties, many young people questioned authority in thier search for freedom, leading western societies to polarize into identity tribes. These waves of experimentation lead many people into a state of curiosity about, and re-examination of religion beliefs. In the nineties, large numbers of people drifted away from their beliefs and became weaker, as technology and advertising discouraged individual thinking. People got lost in the struggle to find a new identity. In the twenty-first century new groups have started to emerge, and many of the changes of everything that society has been through in the last fifty years have started to become more organized. Still, the oppression of a conservative world has reduced the limits of freedom in order to discourage intellectual disagreement or questioning. It is useless to search for wings by questioning kings. Rather, it is up to each individual to find the way to his poppy field, a place where one can be free inside the limits of the mind, living dreams by following passions.

The general concept of time is wrong. How can life be a question of time when time does not exist on its own? Time is a conceptualization of the breaths an individual takes while searching for his path, and so each person’s time depends on every action taken to find bliss. Humans decide where the clock ticks, and until now they have done so ironically. The moon’s rising does not mark the end of a day in people’s live as it does in nature. The end of a day in one’s life comes when the trance of an idea is conquered. Individuals need to live in their own time, placing flags where every mind game ends, while searching for their dreams.

Time will only measure the hard work it took to find the garden of colored flower, that appear like happy people dancing with the wind, a place of absolute joy where everybody works towards their goals, with common beliefs, taking every idea further into a dream of life. This dream of life is shaped by the endless passion to create new worlds of dreams within dreams, losing the fear to follow the path to be taken, the road less traveled. On this path desires become pleasures, pleasures become passions and passions determine the will to choose the right path that leads to the silent way towards happiness and truth. This road leads also towards belief in the capacity to change the world in one’s own time, to realize the perfect equilibrium of two worlds in perfect unison, without getting lost in orbit. One world lives with open eyes, and is subject to the law of gravity. The second world has neither rules nor eyes; everything is possible except cheating death.

One’s belief is crucial, and it must be pure, strong and reasonable according the laws and limits of each person’s imagination. The wider the psyche the louder the voices will sound, making past shadows turn water bubbles into pearls that shine in a moment without past or future; and making time live and die in every second of life. The power to choose when time starts and when it ends is in everyone’s hands. It is never too late to start again, and one can do so an infinite number of times, while the quest to find the true voice that leads to the right path is in motion.

Part VI– The power of Wisdom

The words of the wise are the light of truth, a truth that no one seems to understand; and those who think that they do, get lost in a trance of misinterpretation. Wisdom is the ultimate power of men to create worlds without frontiers. It is very unfortunate that humanity has not yet learned to take advantage of such a gift. On the contrary, the perception of its existence is lost as time fades into sunsets.

The power to learn and to interpret things is the most powerful weapon that God placed in the hands of men. It all starts with one basic belief, to accept that there is a God, and that every particle on earth can infinitely be broken down into something smaller, never reaching a vacuum in space. Wisdom sits on a rock that defines the shape of people’s souls. It is necessary to learn about one’s self in order to have a clearer understanding of others. One must strive to change every weaknesses to strength, and to control the excesses that bring moral attitudes down, even to the point of questioning the value of one’s life.

For centuries knowledge was passed on verbally from one generation to the next, because schools where not accessible to everyone. The growth of civilization into a global economic and technological system opened millions of windows and ways for people to access information with the tips of their fingers, and to have the opportunity to attend school in nearly every corner of the earth. When doors are created and opened so the world may advance into a better future, evil thinkers can walk through them as easily as the good can.

A chemical engineer ought to cure people, and not make explosives for war. What a pity it is that such a gifted mind should dedicate hundreds of hours of work to bringing civilization down, instead of using that time for the good of mankind. Creativity should never be destructive. Politicians always seem to know what is best for everybody when every single being has different needs. They waste time in their campaigns trying to get the people to vote for them with unrealistic promises that seldom amount to anything. Instead, leaders might use their time to locate people of superior intellect to teach people the gift of wisdom, and how to use it in search of a safer and more secure life.

Intellectuals have immense power to communicate messages through the various media. However rather than use this power to lead minds to another level of thinking, helping them to understand the world, they often generate controversy and confusion, which may be readily absorbed by the sponge-like human mind.

The truth of our spritual nature cannot be questioned. If one believes with absolute faith, walking gradually towards a state of inner peace, there is no need to misguide this person to a road with no direction home. Questioning religions has only hurt the pillars that lead society for centuries into a life with brighter nights. The time lost is the instant where wisdom stops.

The leading powers of the world forgot the roots of civilization, creating a world in which people can no longer survive on their own. In fact, humanity can survive under the laws of nature with the brotherhood and help of each other. No one has the power to replace God and feed the poor, but the right use of wisdom can help to liberate the world from unnecessary corruption, and help societies to allocate resources more wisely. The world is a place in which some people can have the freedom to have more than others, but in which no one should have the “right” to die of hunger.

Interpretations of sacred texts are based on faith, which is the one thing a person needs to secure a place in bliss. Faith is the light that leads to the way of wisdom, when good times and bad times separate the weak from the strong. Most of the organized religions misinterpret scripture in the interest of presenting a higher, divine order life for people to worship. An example of bad wisdom that may be directly related to the misinterpretation of ancient pages, is the teaching that the people can be forgiven their sins by donating money. Another is the notion that they can buy the power to demand a wish from God, by praying and faitfully attending to sacred traditions.

A wish can come true only if the will has the persistence to fight to the end, because everything in this life is possible, respecting the limits and laws of nature. Prayers lead the way to inner peace and peace with God, and away from the great cloud of kings that cut the wings of the ones that struggle to be free, making them weak so that they never find what they seek. Corruption can have its place among the greedy, as excrement can have its way in sewer canals. Nobody said that life was an easy road, but that does not mean that because it is bumpy faith can be questioned.

“One man’s freedom ends where another’s begins.” If this rule would be respected many wars, fights and discussions would be avoided. Everything earned the wrong way by taking shortcuts where hundreds of people are affected, results from bad wisdom, which is the real reason so many people in this world suffer. There is a sufficient abundance of resources in this world to make every single human being happy. Wisdom is the greatest weapon that civilization has to lead it towards the future. It has the power to change the people, and finally it is only people that can bring change to this world.

Chapter VII – Rewinding Tape

Our life is a rewinding tape in which our future is the past of memories we have not yet experienced. We are all children of God looking for the path that takes us closer the truth. Unfortunately for every right road there are thousands that make us get lost in circles, fall from our cloud and loose hope. We can’t predict the future but we can prepare ourselves for any storm. A grey day is most likely a rainy day, where water falls from the sky like wild arrows destined to quench dry souls.

The future is directly connected to the past; life is a magic well of experiences that unfortunately has a bottom. Sometimes we see blind people stuck against walls, struggling to find a little bit of light to move on, forgetting how to detach themselves from the chains of the past. We were born to express the glory of God that lives inside us, giving light to people that live in the dark. If we allow our light to shine and unconsciously enlighten others we will illuminate a sky of sleeping stars, liberating them from their own fears, by giving them the hope to try for a better life. So many people waste time that never passes, seconds in slow motion making time become a sickness, waiting for the day to end to start a new one without motion. We should be proud to die some day, for in leaving the life we dream, the dreams of life prepare us for what is next.

The thrust of a passion can make days last minutes and awakes a fire that burns our bed in the early morning to outlive the previous day, making every day better than any in the past. Living life bored makes dry souls become undying, wrinkled skin with no stories to tell, living life inside the same womb where they were conceived. We are all equal, breathing under the sun, sleeping under the moon and falling in love under the stars. We all lived inside our mothers before we ever saw the light of day. Some of us were loved more than others, but still love is free for all.

More than ever we should stand upon our feet and bravely follow the path where we believe happiness lays. If wrong we may try again and as many times as we want, avoiding the road that in the past led to nothing. Try to find a bird crying in the morning; try to find a star that wants to stop shining. Some birds travel the world to awake us all in the morning. Some stars burst in the sky to make us find the perfect moment for a first kiss. Instead we focus into things that make our vision blur into nightmares. We all know how beautiful life is when we are not afraid to walk further. Heaven is the vision of life that emerges when we are not afraid to walk further.
