Merseybeat, a musical journey through the songs of Lennon / McCartney through the beatles and beyond. In 2000, guitarist Declan Walsh attempted and failed to put together a beatles tribute band that would have a fair stab at re-producing all the hits as authentically as they could. However, as the band began to go through guitarists as spinal tap went through drummers, it was becoming clear that this was a project that would not be coming into the world anytime soon.
After 18 months and a handful of gigs, ''The fab four'' as they were called was laid to rest, and the project put on the back burner for a few months. And as often happens, the months turned to years until February 2005 and Declan finally decided to get up and do something.
There was finally four musicians that gelled together and worked well together. Merseybeat had been born. With an idea to take the best of the beatles, and mix it up with the best of the solo material. It seemed like something new, something that hadn't been done before. So why not go for it.
Although they worked well together, the four musicians were two guitarists, a keyboard player, a drummer but still no bass. With gigs booked, an old friend was roped into help out before the band stuttered to yet another halt. Until that is, Declan took the decision to become an ex-guitarist in his own band and turn to the bass. It's easier anyway, it has two less strings for starters. Enter second guitarist and singer Declan Landy and we were ready to go.
Despite performances in the Gleneagles hotel, Killarney and NUI Maynooth with different line ups on both occasions, the band was officially launched on Thursday 14th September in Vicar street and hopefully this time things will work out.
We have a few TBC gigs in the pipeline at the moment, and as soon as we can confirm dates then you guys will be the first to know.
