Synopsis
Proving that there's more to hospitals than just disinfectant and dysentery, GREEN WING takes an altogether unconventional view of the health service. Produced by the team behind SMACK THE PONY, the series is more concerned with the antics of its dysfunctional characters than with actual medical issues, and plays out like a surreal soap opera (think an NHS version of SCRUBS, but with more emphasis on the comedy element).
Oriane and Fay met touring in two Agatha Christie plays. Fay was playing an eighty year old Miss Marples and a glamerous murder while Oriane was a sexually repressed Doctors receptionist and an over emotional maid. They performed nightly to the old and infirm and soon discovered they shared a similar sense of humour about one of their co stars whom they imagined had legs that went into a fine point. So they set about writing their own show only to be side tracked into writing for others!
They have co-writen the critically acclaimed BAFTA Award Winning Green Wing for Channel 4. The writing team were nominated for an RTS Award for Series One and Series Two. They currently have their sitcom 9 To MI5 under option with Feel Good Pictures and their childrens show Who's In The Shed went out on BBC1 earlier in the year. They have just finished writing some Lil-let Bumpers for Style TV
They have jsut finished their new Radio 4 Sitcom MEANWHILE with McDougall and Donkin staring Ronnie Corbett, Mark Addy, Cavern Clarken, James Lance and Alex Lowe. It airs on Radio 4, 6.30 September 11th.
They have also written for My Parents Are Aliens 8, Smack the Pony where their Car Parking Sketch was nominated as the TV Comedy Moment of the Year on the BBCs TV Moments of 2002. They have written for shows such as Not Doing Christmas, Louise, Pinky and Perky, Big Hedz, 2DTV, Party Pieces, Man Stroke Woman 2, Friends Like These, Diner Party Inspectors, Yes Sir I can Boogie, Dead Ringers, Stupid and have also written two Diet Coke adverts (Call Me and French Kiss) as well as performed their show Wrecked at Pleasance, Edinburgh 2000.
SOME NICE THINGS ABOUT US...
GREEN WING
Green Wing feels like its been made by deeply abnormal people. It looks like a fairly safe bet for the years best comedy slick, silly with an unprecedented three strong female leads, an unprecedented hour long running time, innovative directorial style and the best musical breakfast sequence featuring grapefruit since Morecambe and Wise. Its not really recognisable as a sitcom the first 20 minutes feel like the opening sequence of Saving Private Ryan, with characters and jokes being flung at you in a bewildering style. THE TIMES - CAITLIN MORAN
Eight writers are credited and you imagine them all squabbling round a table until you guess that they separated and wrote segments; every scene is a sketch length, lending to a punchline which is generally mucky or surreal or both. A doctor comes into a room to find a buxom colleague weighing her breasts individually on the mailing scales. A woman wearing an eye patch replies to the inevitable concerned request for explanations: I got a sperm in the eye. There is an appealing almost Twin Peaks-like, feel to these scenes. THE GUARDIAN - MARK LAWSON
HELEN AND GAIL ON RADIO 4
Display heaps of humanity, cleverness and an exquisitely wicked sense of fun. Slyly written and brilliantly structured, its Ladies Of Letters with flick knives. RADIO TIMES
Guardian Pick of the Day
SPEEDING COMEDY LAB CHANNEL 4
Todays Must See TV Pick of the Day THE INDEPENDENT
A tragicomic portrayal of speed dating, where romance-seekers risk social carnage FINANCIAL TIMES
There are some good laughs to be had, particularly involving a deluded Russian who thinks hes a spy and a lesbian with a face like a big lump of cheese. TIME OUT
THE BEARDED LADIES EDINBURGH FESTIVAL 2004
THREE WEEKS You are sure to appreciate the sarcastic, witty and comical genius that is the Ladies.
THE SCOTSMAN This is impressive stuff This is comedy with its head on and there are flashes of sheer genius. They deserve all the thunder they can get
THE STAGE To say that Oriane Messina and Fay Ruslings latest piece of scripting lives up to its name is to credit the show with no small achievement. Despite exploring dark issues like sexual frustration and harassment at work, the Bearded Ladies collection of sketches is definitively hilarious
What fun we writers had writing this with some help from the wonderful Mark Heap
Oriane- Were you in Edinburgh last week? I'm pretty certain I saw you in the Pleasance sometime last week, I think. If it wasn't you it was a very good double.
Hey, I went to Safety Catch on Wednesday and loved it! I didn't realize radio plays were so much fun. Tight writing by Laurence and of course the lead actor was smashing! I won't make it tonight, but you should go. xx
Hey there ladies of the facial fuzz. Won't be able to make it to London for your recording but it sounds brilliant. I hope it goes splendidly (I don't think that's spelt right but I don't want to choose another adjective...oooo dilemma I think I'll leave it like that. It proves I'm still a bit punk)
Take Care

Just looking at your profile now, no WAY are either of you 36! You look about 20-odd!
And hehe - my sister just told me there (her being an 'uber-cool' MySpace 15-year-old) that 'A Green Wing writer just took my MySpace Comment-Virginity; that is SO cool!'.
Salutations friends. This truly is an honour for you. I can tell we shall be great friends, we can share our tales of adventure and possibly kill a pig together. My first blog will be appearing within the next few days. Until then, may God be with you.
Greetings and thanks for the add - I only just found your My Space. Derrr.
Anyway, just wanted to say, yet again, thank you to Ori for coming to the convention and being so cheery and funny, helping us raise sooo much lovely dosh for the wee baaaiiirns!
Hey, I hope you two are well! =)
I just wanted some clarification really with regards to the alternative green wing special ending. At the end, May says “Caroline, there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you…” What does he mean exactly? The majority of people seem to think he’s referring to the fact that he’s dying, but didn’t Guy let that slip in the staffroom earlier on in the episode, before telling Caroline that she should be with Mac? Please can you explain – I’m asking on behalf of a few others too!
Thanks x
