THE ECSTACY OF GOLD
Books
KILL EM ALL- 1983 - Metallica's first and fastest album, Kill em all set the standard for heavy music, paving the way for what would eventually become thrash. Many of the songs on the album were co-written or written entirely by Megadeth's Dave Mustaine, one song, "The Four Horsemen" even appears, slightly altered, on Megadeths first album under the name "The Mechanix".
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: The Four Horsemen - Whiplash - Seek and Destroy
"NO REMORSE"- "Kill" era, Live in San Francisco- 1983
RIDE THE LIGHTNING - 1984 - Recorded only one year after Kill em All, RTL was a huge musical leap for Metallica, greatly expanding on song complexity, harmony and Lyrical maturity. It made them an internationally known act, (spawning Metallica's first ever european tours), and is considered by some to be one of the greatest metal albums of all time.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: For Whom the Bell Tolls - Fade to Black - Creeping Death - The Call of Ktulu
"FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS"- RTL Era, Live in Oakland- 1985
MASTER OF PUPPETS- 1986 - The greatest thrash album ever recorded, and the final album recorded with legendary bassist Cliff Burton, Master of Puppets cemented Metallica's standing as a true titan of heavy metal, and vaulted them into the public eye of the top 40. Featuring Metallica classics like the title track, "Sanitarium" and "Orion", Master of Puppets may be the pinnacle of Metallica's songwriting acheivement.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Battery - Master of Puppets - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Orion - Damage Inc.
"SANITARIUM"- MOP Era, live @ Roskilde Festival in Denmark- 1986
...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL- 1988 - The album that really put Metallica on the pop-culture map, based largely on the strength of the video for "One", which aired heavily on MTV. "Justice" is arguably Metallica's most complex album. Very dark and mechanical in it's delivery, it shows a band coming to terms with its post-Burton standing in the Heavy Metal world, and taking a huge leap toward mainstream acceptance.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Blackened - One - Harvester of Sorrow - Dyers Eve
"ONE"- Justice Era, off the "Live Shit: Binge and Purge" collection, San Diego- 1989
METALLICA (The Black Album)- 1991 -Perhaps the best and most well known heavy metal album in history, The Black Album made Metallica a true household name. It reaped numerous Mega radio hits, including their most well known song "Enter Sandman". The Black Album was a change in musical direction, foregoing long, complex songs for shorter, meatier tracks with radio airplay in mind, it will stand as the height of their professional career and a staple of modern metal.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Enter Sandman - Sad But True - The Unforgiven - Wherever I may Roam - Nothing Else Matters
"WHEREVER I MAY ROAM"- Black album era, from "Live Shit"- 1992
LOAD- 1996 - A huge departure for them musically, Load redefined what the band Metallica was, almost completely abandoning their thrash roots for a bluesy brand of hard rock. While it was a success commercially, many regard it as something of a low point in their career, though it yielded some classic, #1 hits.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Ain't my Bitch - Until it Sleeps - Hero of the Day - King Nothing - Bleeding Me
"WASTING MY HATE"- Load era- live on TV- 1996
RELOAD- 1997 - The twin album to Load, Reload is almost identical to its counterpart in Style and structure. It is often lumped in with Load as Metallica's "Rock-radio-darlings" phase of the mid-90's.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Fuel - The Memory Remains - Better than You - The Unforgiven II
"FUEL"- ReLoad era, Live in Texas- 1997
GARAGE INC.- 1998 - A re-release of the 1987 EP "Garage Days Re-Revisited", but including a whole new album of covers ranging from Bob Segers "Turn The Page" to a Mercyful fate medley, Garage Inc. was largely meant to sate the fans' hunger for a re-release of the Garage Days EP. It sold extremely well, yielding some bonafide Metallica radio classics and keeping the bands popularity clicking along at a steadily expanding pace.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: DISC 1- Turn the Page - Die, Die My Darling - Whiskey in the Jar - Mercyful Fate Medley] DISC 2- Last Caress/Green Hell - Breadfan - Am I Evil? - Stone Cold Crazy
"WHISKEY IN THE JAR"- Garage Inc. era, live- 1998
S&M- 1999 - S&M was San Francisco Symphony Orchestra conductor Michael Kamen's symphonic re-imagining of a selection of Metallicas most classic songs, S&M was recorded Live over 2 days in 1999, and is generally regarded as being one of the best Rock/Symphony collaborations ever done.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS- No Leaf Clover - Until it Sleeps - The Call of Ktulu - Nothing Else Matters - One
"NO LEAF CLOVER"- from the album S&M- San Francisco- 1999
ST. ANGER- 2003 - Metallica's first album after the events of the "Some Kind of Monster" documentary, the album shows a very different band, stripping their previously infamous studio polish and production for a raw, garage band sound. It suffered from a lukewarm reception, and because of little radio airplay ended up being Metallica's poorest selling album to date, while still being hailed by critics and some fans as a great Heavy Metal acheivement.
ALBUM HIGHLIGHTS: Frantic - St. Anger - Some Kind of Monster - The Unnamed Feeling
"FRANTIC"- Live @ Big day in- Madly in Anger tour- 2004
