There are many others who have taken on the Metal Mafia name but only ONE is the original!!
"This 'zine {Metal Mafia} has been kicking around the underground for a few years now and it is Dea's dedication to all things brutal that has earned her the respect of those who whistle the tunes of bloody gore" --Marty Rytkonen, Metal Maniacs/August 1999 issue.
METAL MAFIA (check out our OLD website, btw) started out as an underground metal 'zine in 1995. Back then there were not many people who had computers or websites. Everything was done through snail mail. The old schoolers I'm sure remember those days of hand writing letters and stuffing as many fliers as possible into an envelope. It got to the point where the post office workers KNEW us by name!
When Metal Mafia first started out it was just a simple black and white xeroxed 'zine held together by three staples. The layouts were messy and most of the photos were just glued on to the pages before they were copied! The intent for Metal Mafia editor Dea Evenbeck (now Roddy) was just to promote and support underground metal bands across the world because she held such passion for the music!
As time went on and the Metal Mafia name became more known she wanted to grow the magazine into something bigger! She enlisted the help of Jen Matthews and Jill Girardi. With the three metal woman together they were able to upgrade the 'zine into a more professional looking thicker newprint zine.
We released 10 issues total over the years. We interviewed various bands including Mortal Decay, Internal Bleeding, Dying Fetus, Crisis, Voivod, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, AxCx, Regurgitation, Drogheda, Vomit Remnants, Fleshgrind, Necrophagia, Disfigured, Lividity, Adnauseum, The Chasm, Immolation, Morgue and many, many more.
With our last issue we also gave out a FREE compliation CD entitled, "Lacerations of Brutality" with the magazine.
We, the editors, were also featured in other 'zines including Metal Core, The Outcast, CANADIAN ASSAULT (check out this OLD interview with us!), Satan's Sweet Slavery and others, along with being included in MANY album "thank you" lists.
The three of us on the cover of Metal Core many moons ago!
Our tenth and final issue was the hardest to release. That was when the internet became more popular. We depended on ad sales to cover the printing costs of our 'zine (even with the sales we still had to use our own funds to cover the rest). More and more webzines were popping up and record labels/bands were turning to the internet to advertise instead of purchasing print ads. Print zines were become more and more obsolete. We intended to release an 11th issue but it never made it to see the light of day. The money was not there to cover the print costs and we all became involved with other things and had less and less time to devote to the magazine.
I, myself (Dea) was married and became a metal mom which meant a lot less time to dedicate to the zine (and it took a lot of time to do the zine, btw). With children comes less and less money AND time to put towards things you enjoy apart from family.
Jenn went on to start JensMetalPage which has become very popular in the online metal world.
Jill is the ceo of Razorback Records(if you have not heard of them, please do not call yourself "metal").
