Metal Mode were formed in 1993 when Keif Stonestreet, Chris Drinkwater (both guitar), Dave Thorpe (bass) and Richard Little (drums) were looking for a singer for their band. The idea was to do metal cover versions of Depeche Mode songs, hence the name Metal Mode. Dave suggested getting in Megaphone Mick Vincent on vocals and then the mayhem began.
Initial rehearsals at Richard's house didn't go too well, so much so that after a couple of weeks we were asked to leave! We found ourselves a nice rehearsal studio in Watford (which soon closed down, as did most places we seemed to play as you will see) and prepared to attempt a few songs at a Jam Nite at The Plough in Kenton (which later closed and is now an Indian Restaurant). At the time this was full of widdly widdly blues guitarists so our initial attempt at Dreaming of Me and Photographic got us banned from the pub! For some reason we got a reprieve and were allowed back, mainly because we would drag 50 or 60 poor mates along to watch us who bizarrely seemed to enjoy our songs, even if no one else in the pub did!
After around 5 Jam Nite appearances it was time for our 1st proper gig, a Christmas extravaganza supporting Crispy Sick at The Anglers Retreat in West Drayton. Further gigs followed; 2 at The Wag and Bone in Watford (closed), 2 at The Wagon and Horses in Uxbridge (closed), The Swan and Bottle in Uxbridge (pub part closed) and The Moonlight Club in Hampstead supporting Staunch Chunk (closed). We even had a gig booked in at The Museum in North Wembley the night it closed and a gig in Milton Keynes where the gig venue burnt down a week before we were due to play there, so maybe it is a surprise we are being asked to play again!!
After attempting upwards of 60 or so songs and realising only a handful were any good we called it a day. We reformed for Stones Aid 1 and 2, the latter which was unfortunately our last gig with Richard who tragically died in November 2003. We again came our of retirement in August 2006 to play 2 songs at Kat and Onion's wedding with Andy Moore on drums.
We are back on March 15th to open the show with a shortened set. This is for 2 reasons, one because we are introducing John Hire on drums. He formerly drummed with Grunters Wipeout, 100% and Happylife. The other reason is so that we can play while still relatively sober!
The set will be dedicated to the memory of Richard Little. No doubt he will be up there somewhere ripping the p*ss out of us!! Cheers mate, have a pint of cider from us. Metal Mode forever!
