Methushelah's Interests
|
| General | My interests are as varied as they come, though I'm most inclined towards the world of the pure and applied sciences. I do spend a lot of time grappling with the ever-evolving phenomenon that is Internet/Web technology - as very much the amateur. I prefer to learn how to do things rather then use off-the-shelf solutions whenever possible. This section of MySpace was designed by its builders for lists of course, so I'll throw one in: Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, History, Geography, Meteorology, Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biology, Horticulture, Aircraft /Spacecraft, Electronic Engineering and 'real' webpage design. I'm sort of a 'Renaissance Man' - insofar as having learned at least a little something about almost every subject in the realm of human knowledge. | | Music |
The Beatles, Steppenwolf, The Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac, The Doors, Cream, Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, Aerosmith, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, The Pretenders, Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers Band, Jimi Hendrix, U2, The Mamas and The Papas, The Righteous Brothers, Stone Temple Pilots, The Grateful Dead, Peter Frampton, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, INXS, Lynyrd Skynyrd, R.E.M., Eurythmics, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, The Rolling Stones, Iron Butterfly, Talk Talk, Simon and Garfunkel, Madonna, The B 52's, Aretha Franklin, Blind Faith, The Temptations, ZZ Top, Lenny Kravitz, The Pointer Sisters, Bad Company, Jethro Tull, No Doubt, Talking Heads, Eagles. This 'list' could go on... I had no idea myself how broad-based (in time at least) my tastes in music were until I began a process to compile it. Originally this was done for one of my 'other' on-line projects.
|
| | Movies | Just a short list here, there're certainly more flicks then this that I've seen and would rate highly: 2001: A Space Odyssey, Soylent Green, Tora! Tora! Tora!, The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, and Alien (the first one, 1979) - by far the most frightening Sci-Fi horror picture that's ever been made. | | Television | I don't wish to offend anyone, after all I do browse other people's pages and read them... but in my opinion almost everything on television today sucks. Reality is totally faked, Drama is totally unrealistic, and Action is largely a tasteless mix of soft-porn and violence. The cartoons my younger nephew and niece used to watch, not that long ago, are quite often the most intelligent programming on television these days. | | Books | Add Soon... « ¦ »

I admire all who through the simple act of trying to improve their own lives, or expand their own knowledge, unintentionally changed the world for the better. For the road to hell is not just littered with good intentions, it's littered with self deception, blind ambition, self-righteous arrogance, outright fraud, hypocrisy, and egocentrism.

Methushelah's Blurbs |
About me:
What can I say about myself? I went to school, over a decade ago, to learn about all things electronic, and acquired a real understanding of how electronic 'gadgets' work. Though I've found that, ironically, my education hasn't much improved the proficiency with which I use any of these 'new-fangled' gadgets! I must be, at heart, a 20th Century Man... somewhat lost in this new Millennium. Of course the world of Information Technology has changed monumentally since my education of the early 1990's. However I am still an active statistic on the learning curve of this digital nirvana that we all now live in today.
Up until just over a week ago (Sept. 10th, 06) I never really considered building a profile page here (at MySpace). For I'd heard the 'stories' most people my age have been told about this service. An on-line world of teenagers looking for 'things' their parents would be shocked to learn they even know anything about; and an un-official home to every sick/perverted psychopathic monster with a computer. Of course I'm educated enough to know that nearly everything you see and hear on Television should be taken with a grain of salt - but not dismissed entirely. I could go on, but this sort of 'commentary' would be more suited to a blog entry. Needless to say I'm now here so I'll write more about me.
My profile picture was scanned off an old community college ID card - and is ironically one of the best photographs of me in existence. I've always been camera shy, and even in this age of digital cameras/cell phones (I still don't own one), I've never had the inclination to photograph nearly everything, or be photographed, almost every day. I'm not knocking this kind of activity, just stating a fact in the current reality that is my life.
My appearance has not really changed much since this ID photo was taken. I still weigh about 145 pounds... and can wear anything I used to wear back in high school. I've no gray hair, or bald spots, or any other outward signs of 'aging' that so many people (especially men) who are now in their mid-forties seem to exhibit. When I'm 'carded' for something, be it alcohol or cigarettes, I never get mad - I take it as a compliment. The double-look I get sometimes is truly priceless.
I do like to go out occasionally at night... and 'party' as it's still commonly referred to. But trying to talk, to anyone, in a loud 'happening' bar/nightclub has always been a challenge for me. I can certainly hold my liquor (officially a crime/disease now-a-days), and do so with dignity and style; this means I don't get wild, loud, foul-mouthed... and/or thrown out of bars by bouncers. This could also be construed to mean that I don't really know how to have fun; I'll confess that probably is mostly true... at least out in public.
I like to go to places the younger generations go to enjoy life, primarily because:
- In some instances they're the same 'establishments' now that they were ten, or even twenty years ago.
- I'm still a young man, intellectually and philosophically at least.
- No one I've ever met can tell how old I really am by my physical appearance - so I don't feel out of place. People who do venture a guess are always a decade, or more, low.
Although most times I couldn't tell anyone who asks what artists/songs are being covered by whatever live band is playing that night. Some aspects of Time's relentless march are always inescapable.
I spend a lot of my free time 'working' on my PC; doing stuff like building this MySpace page, or downloading image files from NASA or other space-related websites. I'm interested in astronomy, physics, and virtually all applied science necessary for space travel and exploration; and have been so since the late 1960's. I still look forward to a day when an 'ordinary' person (like me) will be able to go to any airport, and board a hypersonic 'vehicle' that routinely flies its passengers in and out of orbit. If I live to see this day, I'll die knowing all of my childhood daydreams have been vindicated. Even if I never actually get to go myself, just knowing the future I anticipated as an eight year old boy has finally come to pass will be enough. If this seems a little odd to some of you younger people out there, I can tell you that all this IT-PC stuff we take so much for granted today - was considered to be the musings of science fiction writers in the 1970's. The 70's was the age of IBM Mainframes as big as a warehouse... and programs 'written' on punch cards.
If I sometimes wax nostalgic, in writing or in conversation, over times long ago; it's only because those of you under age 39 or so have no idea how much real freedom existed back when I really was a young man. Back before my elders, those acid-popping, protest-marching hypocrites took over State and Local government... and instituted their 'progressive' vision - our modern Police State. This last paragraph is for my true peers; those of you out there who remember 'eight-track tapes' and 'head shops' - and aren't ashamed of, but might just be a little afraid of, your own past. I, as well as most of you, had to let old habits die in order to survive in this new world of coerced submission of bodily fluids to labs contracted by our employers.
I hope this small window into my mind and my life, despite its rambling structure, was well worth the read.

Who I'd like to meet:
I've thought a great deal the last couple of days about what I should write here. I just can't bring myself to commit to a webpage what I really want to say. From what I've seen so far in my 'travels' around the MySpace world - the 'things' usually written here by others reveals far more about themselves then, I think, most of them even realize. Usually a lot more then anything else they've written in fact. Brief, or completely omitted, statements of preference here are no exception. This page of mine is probably the most 'text-heavy' page you'll ever see here at MySpace; it would seem that the time-honored ability to express one's self in writing (which I have yet to master) has largely vanished from this 'post-modern' world. So who would I really like to meet? I will keep this deceptively vague but utterly simple: I'd like to meet people who actually have something to say.
The image file used for this page's background is linked directly (hot-linked) from the servers of ImageShack, an easy-to-use image hosting service for everyone.

This MySpace front (home) page is a modem friendly site. I still live with a 56K modem - and choose to do so deliberately. The hordes of malicious hackers out there aren't that interested in compromising systems still using a dial-up connection. Of course using a modem to go on-line can be frustrating at times. Browsing through MySpace pages has truly enlightened me to the widespread use of broadband connection services today. Some front pages I've seen are sure 'loaded up' with a lot of bandwidth hungry stuff. I intend to use the MySpace Blog feature for much of what I'll ultimately add to this site. It looks to me, based on what I've seen browsing so far, that this blog feature is much underutilized by most MySpace users - and it also looks to me as though you can 'drop' html-inline style code there just as easily as you can right here.
The image below is a 'scaled down' copy of my homemade background JPEG (.jpg) file. I sort of threw it together in a hurry because I wanted a large 'tiled' background to use here; and also didn't want the tiling 'effect' to be obvious. I prefer to use images I've made, or at least modified, rather then just grabbing something quick off the web. Although the 960 x 720 pixels version is what I've used here; There's also a 800 x 600 pixels version, self titled Methushelah's Nebula, that I've uploaded to Glitter Graphics. All are welcome to use this file if they so desire. That seems to be the whole point of the Glitter Graphics website after all.
This quasi-thumbnail image I've used here is, ironically, uploaded to ImageShack. Truth be known, I was quite curious as to how 'real looking' I could make a 'nebula' quickly... with the limited image-editing software at my disposal. I literally cranked it out using the Windows98 OEM installed software on my old system. The time limits are up on the trial version(s) of the new system's Corel software. So I figured I'd just use what's already here (and already well understood by me) rather then whipping out the credit card. Although creative as I often am... creativity is a very low priority in my budget.
