Instituto Cultural Mexicano de Los Angeles
The Mexican Cultural Institute, located at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument, is the premier venue for the expression of traditional and contemporary art and culture from the Mexican, Mexican American and Chicano perspective.
Founded by the Mexican government in 1990 and now run as a non-profit organization, el Instituto is committed to providing education, disseminating information, and serving as a valuable resource for the world community, with an active emphasis on serving the residents of Los Angeles and its environs.
From our central location at Plaza Olvera Street, we are actively committed to preserving, presenting and teaching the broad, cross-border iconography of the Mexican community, its popular cultural expressions and rich traditions. Open five days a week and free to the public, the Institute’s public community spaces include a Library and Resource Center and an Art Gallery that presents exhibitions throughout the year featuring traditional and contemporary artists.
Our cultural programming includes participation in numerous festivals and celebrations presented annually free to the public. In collaboration with COFEM, the Institute offers citizenship, leadership, computer and language classes and services to the Latino community.
We work with other El Pueblo stakeholders – merchants, cultural organizations and the City of Los Angeles – to promote the use and enjoyment of Plaza Olvera, Olvera Street, Placita de Dolores and the many historical and cultural structures.

Paradoxes of Mexico City Exposed by
Authors David Lida and Sam Quiñones
Saturday, June 21, 5pm
American-born, Mexico City-based author David Lida will present his newest book “First Stop in the New World: Mexico City, the Capital of the 21st Century” at the Mexican Cultural Institute’s Art Gallery. He will be in conversation with Sam Quiñones, noted author of non-fiction books about Mexico and a writer for the Los Angeles Times.
Both authors will read from sections of their respective books, engage in conversation about their experiences and take questions from the attendees. Books will be available for sale and signing. Co-sponsored by the Cervantes Center of Arts & Letters.
