mexiphobia's Blurbs |
About me:
In today's society, we are inundated with images of illegal immigrants, drugs and violence along the Mexico border. Mexiphobia chronicles a different struggle in the Big Bend of West Texas, an area which stretches for 450 miles along the Rio Grande River. Bordered by the Big Bend National Park on the U.S. side and the small, poverty stricken villages of Boquillas del Carmen, Santa Elena and Paso Lajitas in Northern Mexico, the Big Bend area has long been thought of as an international community with a river running through it by residents on both sides. For centuries, people crossed back and forth along this section of the river as part of daily life: to work, to shop, and to play. That is until May 10, 2002, when in the name of Homeland Security, the U.S. Border Patrol closed these historic crossings without warning and without providing any alternatives for people who had built their lives and their livelihoods around this tiny international community, which is burdened by the lack of a legal port of entry. Thanks in large measure to a lack of a viable economy and a dwindling population; what once was a unified border community is now an unaided, unallied, and unconnected existence of individuals.
Mexiphobia explores the history of the area, the current situation now that the border is closed, and the future that lies ahead if a change in current public policy does not occur. While Mexiphobia is not focused on the subject of more publicized border issues, it does reveal how important cultural and familial bonds can be to not only preserving but also strengthening our national security.
Since September 11, there has been a new urgency to secure America..s borders. The act of closing the border along the Rio Grande was intended to prevent the entry of terrorists and instruments of terror into the U.S. However, there is no convincing evidence of an Al Qaeda terrorist presence in Mexico. Locals argue that the Big Bend, where even few immigrants attempt to cross, is too remote for terrorists. Surrounded by endless desert and craggy mountain peaks, the people living in these tiny pueblos could not and would not provide a hiding place for a foreigner attempting to cross undetected. As one elderly Mexican man, living in Boquillas, Pablo, reminds us, ..We..re afraid of terrorists also...
Mexiphobia gives the innocent a voice. The locals along this forgotten stretch of the Texas/Mexico border and their experiences can speak to the world and add to the discussion of how to effectively protect borders. American and international audiences alike can learn from this remote and sparsely populated corner of the world. The Big Bend area..in which cultural boundaries are blurred even when borders are clear .. shows us how to build bonds instead of barriers between two neighbors.
