The Mental Health Association of NW PA is organized for people diagnosed with mental illness. We provide an atmosphere where mental health consumers can safely relax with their peers. We are consumer run organization. The goal is to support and promote mental health recovery. The Consumer Center provides a safe environment for members to enjoy a wide range of social or educational activities or to just be. Advocacy efforts range from navigating systems such as: mental health, housing, vocational, educational and financial to writing a resumé or helping someone register to vote. Any and all adults above the age of 18 with a history of treatment for mental health needs may seek free membership and services from the Mental Health Association. We operate for the benefit of mental health consumers through consumer conceived, designed and operated programs. Membership in the MHA is free and there are no requirements regarding your attendance. Come as little or as often as you want!

    Internship

We have had numerous social work majors complete their field placement internships here with us. The results have been outstanding!

The interns plan, organize and execute activities and programs designed to engage association members and encourage them to continue their journey to recovery. Our web site mhanp.org/intern.php shares some of their experience.

These young college interns bring with them excitement and enthusiasm. Their inovative ideas encourage our members to join the activities created by them. These activities and programs aid our members in their mental health recovery. The programs developed by our interns included:

    • Teaching painting and drawing followed by a formal art show
    • Teaching drama followed by a series of skits before a public audience
    • Teaching music and music appreciation with seasonal performances
    • Organizing peer support group funcions and encouraging member involvement
    • Leading 'Wellness Recovery Action Plan' formulation programs
    • Teaching computer literacy to members
    • Interacting socially with members to encourage involvement with existing programs

An album showing the work of Shawn Tubbs, Mercyhurst, has been added to our photo galary
