Mhondoro, A Shona name meaning "spirit of a lion", is based in Champaign, IL. They formed in January, 2007, playing popular music from Zimbabwe ,by artists such as Thomas Mapfumo, Oliver Mtukudzi, the Bhundu Boys, and others as a tribute to the range of vibrant music Zimbabweans have to offer. Mhondoro co-founder Clifford Jakopo is a highly accomplished artist hailing from Rugare,Harare Zimbabwe. Clifford also founded IDWALAELIKHULU , one of Zimbabwe's leading traditional drum and dance, theatre troupes, and has appeared in African feature films with artists such as Oliver Mutukudzi, as well as Disney's "A Far Off Place" with Reese Witherspoon. In August, 2008, Mhondoro joined forces with Guinean master drummer Bolokada Conde, former lead soloist for Guinea's world famous drum ensembe Percussions de Guinea, and has added popular music from Guinea, including orginal creations by Bolokada, to their show.
