Conceived in 2004 as a raw, monotone and violent Black Metal projec Mhorgl has evolved, becoming more epic in nature and incorporating a wider range of musical influences and ideas while retaining the aggression which will always be the basis of the band’s vision.
Originally beginning as a solo, studio based project by bass player and songwriter James Campbell, Mhorgl slowly progressed with the addition of Sam Moretta on vocals and Robert Thorpe on lead guitar for the recording of the project's first demo, The Shadow of Morgoth.
The Shadow of Morgoth was released in May, 2006 and consisted of 5 tracks of raw Scandanavian influenced black metal in the vein of Darkthrone and Gorgoroth with some traditional metal elements added to the mix as Mhorgl look to put their individual stamp on the genre.
Immediately after the release of their first demo work was commenced on a second, however it became evident as writing progress that the new material would go well beyond the scope of a four or five song release as was originally planned.
June, 2007 saw the release of Mhorgl’s first full length recording, The Sacrificial Flame.
Featuring 10 tracks and an hour long journey through passages of blasting black metal and tortured soundscapes to moments of sombre melancholy, reflection and despair. The Sacrificial Flame explores the concept of sacrifice, whether it be to a higher entity or of one’s self. From child sacrifice to the Mayan gods in South America (Cavalcade Beneath the Shroud of Death) and to Moloch in the burning waste dump of the Ben Hinnom Valley outside ancient Jerusalem (The Valley of Ben Hinnom), to Odin’s sacrifice of himself on Yggdrasill in the pursuit of wisdom (The Paean of Hangatyr), the Sacrifical Flame travels through moments of the ecstasy of religious fervor to utter anguish and pain.
An epic offering of traditional black metal infused with symphonic and doom elements, the Sacrificial Flame ventures beyond the realms of death and suffering to bring Mhorgl’s dark and distinctive sound to the world, straight from black Gehenna. It is the ultimate Baptism of Fire.
After the release of The Sacrificial Flame, Mhorgl decided it was time to take their music into the live arena, enlisting the talents of Louis Rando on drums. Louis aka "Disaster" is well know in the Perth and Australian metal scene as the drummer/vocalist for Black/Death/War metal outfit Furor, whom he as toured with extensively Australia wide. Louis is also a member of Dubai based Death Metal band Nervecell and a regular performer on international stages.
With Louis on board Mhorgl has moved from strength to strength on the live front quickly developing and moulding their sound from a studio based project to a fully fledged live band. Stripping back their instrumentation and developing a more aggressive metal sound Mhorgl is again progressing as they seek to produce a sound and style that is truly unique to the band.
Mhorgl delivers the relentless battery and violence of Black Metal combined with unusual song structure, harmonies and explosive lead guitar.
