REVIEWS

In It For The Money Zine
This EP by Mia Hope is a very mixed affair... the songs veer from giant choruses that sound almost Deftones-ey, to absolutly BRUTAL beatdowns, to some almost medieval power metal sort of stuff... This keeps things interesting, which is vitally important when you're this heavy. Songs hardly let up, aside from the grand choruses it's beatdown, to fast verse, to bridge, to more screaming to crazy beatdown, it RULES! I missed these guys live a few towns over from me the other month and I am GUTTED, because I bet they TEAR IT UP live... the singer can scream real high and also scream very low (I mean like death-metal low). These two traits, combined with some moving spoken-word passages and some great absurd song titles (My Sister Looks Like Kevin Keegan is surely the best I'VE heard this year...), all top off Mia Hope's great sound and give them a good chance in the over-saturated Dillinger Escape Plan/Converge fanboy scene, I mean, you all know how rubbish most 'metalcore' bands are... you don't need me to tell you, but Mia Hope are a MASSIVE exception! This CD has great riffs, great choruses, great beatdowns, great vocal range, great song structures, great lyrics, great packaging and is a great, great release. If more people looked a little deeper into the scene than just casually browsing mainstream 'alternative' rock magaines, then these guys would take off for sure, they easily deserve equal amounts of praise as fellow mentalists Architects. Pick it up, see 'em live... mosh your face clean off!

4 out of 5
If Architects were last year’s “saviours of British metal” then this five-track EP sees Mia Hope make a strong claim for that label in 2007. Right from the opening frenetic riffs of first track “Adverse credit causes dwarfism”, this is mightily impressive stuff that’s frighteningly heavy but also refreshingly diverse. While many new British bands are content to just peddle run-of-the-mill metalcore, Mia Hope try something different and succeed. Screamed vocals, off-kilter riffing and pummelling beatdowns make up the backbone of the bands sounds but there’s much more to it than that, and the melodic edge that permeates songs like “I went to St. Ives and all I got was this lousy retro-virus” and a number of other intriguing musical side-steps, suggest that with Mia Hope its very much a case of expect the unexpected. Complex but certainly not pretentious, crushingly heavy but also intelligent and diverse, “The Collapse of Etymology” is a little gem of a record

MIA HOPE - THE COLLAPSE OF ETYMOLOGY - WE LOVE RECORDS
Furious math core meets like-being-stabbed-in-the-face-with-a-cactus hardcore, Mia Hope have dazzled us many times before, but here they finally take the fury of Zao and create something all of their own

Rock Midgets Review

THE COLLAPSE OF ETYMOLOGY
Having already shared stages with many a UK underground luminary, Mia Hope aim to kick start their year for real with the release of their new EP The Collapse of Etymology. Seeing the light of day on We Love Records, a rapidly emerging label that's home to some of the very best and most inventive British acts around at the moment, Mia Hope do a fine job of upholding the labels impeccable run of top quality releases. The pummelling drums and anguished screeches of 'Adverse Credit Causes Dwarfism' opens the EP in consummate fashion and gives the listener a good indicator of what Mia Hope are all about. Stirring together the striking fretwork – and not to mention the humorous song titles - of disbanded Seattle greats Botch and the heavy grooves of Every Time I Die, Mia Hope repetitively bludgeon the listener to submission, be it the heavy as hell outro of 'I Went To St. Ives And All I Got Was This Lousy Retro Virus' or the relatively straight up hardcore stomp of 'My Sister Looks Like Kevin Keegan'. The Collapse of Etymology isn't the complete package, but it's a release that provides more than a few pointers to suggest that Mia Hope could soon deliver something truly memorable.

Metal Hammer

There is no beauty in this music- just raw unbridled violence. The songs are hammered out beginning to end like a horseshoe on a smitthies anvil, This music could lay waste to an urban centre like a beastie boys video gone wrong.

www.planet-loud.com

Holy fuck! Mia Hope have already got members of the Planet Loud team in a bit of a tizzy. Looking like High School nerds but sounding like a twisted car wreck involving As I Lay Dying and Everytime I Die, Mia Hope are a shape-throwing, beatdown-obsessed car-crash of a musical experience. They cite everyone from Dillinger Escape Plan to Black Flag as influences and frankly, we're expecting big things from these Brit hopefuls over the next few years.

PART II

Currently our favourite band of the moment, young Southerners Mia Hope return to Berkshire for a mid-evening appearance on this bill. As the band take to the stage, Planet Loud has high expectations from the outfit especially considering their recent rave review from one of our writers and, thankfully, they don't disappoint. The crowd gingerly step forward as the band screech into their set but quickly take a step back as frontman Pasty lurches onto the dancefloor, mike in hand, screaming and convulsing like he's posessed. Behind him the band put on a ferocious performance, tossing out slab after slab of unhinged metalcore. Part Darkest Hour, part Slayer, part Everytime I Die their sound, by rights and considering the crap PA, should be all over the place but quality musicianship brings it all together to form one stunning slab of heaviness. Frontman Pasty is still flailing around on the dancefloor as the band career through their Backstreet Boys cover and they deservedly recieve more than just a polite round of applause from another bunch of kids won over by this up and coming band. This band will be fucking up a venue near you very soon. Don't miss out
