Hey Y'all. I started playing piano in a rock 'n roll band with my best pal Howard Pope in Toronto when I was 13, playing Iggy Pop and David Bowie tunes,(of course!). But I "quit the band" to learn jazz and blues once I discovered Billie Holiday's vortex of beauty and pain. Right after high school my brother Daniel and I formed a sorta Punk-Cabaret act that crossed over onto Toronto's Queen Street Indie scene playing with folks like Jane Siberry etc.
Later on, (1989), I joined the Pop Acapella group "The Nylons" to make records and tour the world...(working with favorite soul stars like Roberta Flack and Gladys Knight), which made me happy for a while.
When I left the group and landed on Venice beach I started developing the "Rock meets Electronica" sound of my first solo C.D. "Loudboy Radio" inspired by L.A.'s spoken word and performance scene, (see MICAHBARNES.COM).
That dark and nasty club-oriented sound led to my work with Thunderpuss on "Welcome To My Head", (which suprised us all by climbing to NO. 1 on the Billboard club chart as an unsigned record!).
After a few years of creating evening-length word and music works over at Highways Performance Theatre I started to boil the material back down to the current crop of piano and voice songs I am performing and recording these days. The new C.D. "Micah Barnes" has a Cabaret-Noir vibe and is produced by my former Loudboy band-mate Clint Yeager (of Speedqueen) and mixed by the legendary Geza X.
Hey Micha - how are you? Thought we'd drop by to say hello and to share our latest news...
land of giants original 1982 single cannibal dolls/seven men (along with nine previously unreleased tracks) was re-released worldwide on iTunes this month.
Hey you - in Chi-town doing what you've been doing in Toronto. (well, not exactly - can't keep up with you :) Some of it's been absolutely great, some challenging, some of it illuminating - I am forever changed. Headed out to L.A. 4/4 TO 5/20 - doing the Highways thing and seeing my friends.
Micah your song "Boy With a Secret" is one of my absolute favorite songs... still this many years later. It's brilliant, naughty, and HOT. You've done good... I mean you've done bad! :-)
