MySpace Layouts

Michael D'Angelo is one of the current rising jazz drummers of his generation. A recent graduate from the University of North Texas, he was a member of the One O'Clock Lab Band in the 2008-2009 season. The band's annual recording, Lab 2009, was nominated for two Grammy's in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble and Best Instrumental Composition (for "Ice-Nine") categories. With the band, he performed at NYC's Birdland jazz club, and the World Saxophone Congress this past July in Bangkok, Thailand.

Michael is most known for being the first winner of Modern Drummer Magazine's Undiscovered Drummer Contest in the year 2000, and performed at the Modern Drummer Festival and was featured on the DVD release by Hudson Music.

Through high school, Michael was involved with many youth organizations, including the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra, and Charlotte Youth Wind Ensemble. He was a recipient of the Marie Rowe Arts Scholarship sponsored by the Symphony Guild of Charlotte. He was also a member of North Carolina's All-State Jazz Ensemble sponsored by UNC Greensboro, and worked with Ellis Marsalis and Terri Lyne Carrington. He is also the only percussionist to receive the Mariam Cannon Hayes Young Artist's Award sponsored by Appalachian State University.

At North Texas, Michael performed with the Wind Symphony, Advanced Percussion Ensemble, Two O'Clock Steel Band, Two O'Clock Lab Band, and One O'Clock Lab Band; and studied with professors Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Ed Soph, Ed Smith, Lynn Seaton, Jay Saunders, Jim Riggs, and Steve Wiest.

His current plans are to continue on to graduate school to pursue his Master's degree in Jazz Studies; and to further develop his career as a professional musician. He is a proud endorser of Pearl Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Remo Drumheads.

Oh yeah totally. I had an export for about 12 years. Total beast of a kit. The kit I have now (Rogers Holiday) i got by trading a working Tama Rockstar for it.

Do you play in Charlotte a lot?
