Michael Dyer is a songwriter/singer who, over the years, wrote songs just for his own pleasure. Then, in 2006 he acquired a new laptop with song-arrangement software. The end result is that he released 3 CDs in 2007: Nothing Seems Like What It Seems, Our Unwinding Time, and Aboriginal Angel, all of which fall into the folk-rock/soft-rock genre. Most of Michael Dyer's songs feature poetic lyrics, warm vocals/harmonies, well-defined bass themes and drum rhythms, subtle guitar picking, ethereal keyboard, and dual-guitar leads. Some listeners have described some of his songs as "mystical rock" since those songs (e.g. The Trek) involve a search for enlightenment. Many songs are about love and relationships. In Our Unwinding Time the song of that title is about a love relationship unraveling as through time is going backwards, so the song features backwards music. In Aboriginal Angel, the cover song is about an Aboriginal Angel who plays rock 'n' blues on didgeridoos, so Michael plays a didgeridoo as a lead instrument in that song. Other themes in his songs include: war ('Mid Moss-Covered Boulders), age (Young Old Man), and destruction of the environment (EarthSong). In Feb. 2008 he released his fourth CD: Compli-intricated Life. As a hobby Michael enjoys glass-blowing. He employs techniques such as glass slumping, flame-working, glass casting and Venetian-style blowing. The covers of his CDs include images of some of his glass creations.
"Compli-Intricated Life" by Michael Dyer is an alternative soft rock album that takes an inventive look at love and relationships. It is certainly original, as it combines wavy soft elements with bassy vocals, wailing guitar solos and a strong indie-influence. Michael's lyrics have a nice flow to them and are quite clever. The album opens with "Alphabet Soup Love,” which features lyrics that tell a story of betrayal based on....you guessed it....the letters floating in a bowl of alphabet soup. Tackling the topic of regret, "If I Could Undo" introduces a bit of a Latin flair in its guitar progression, and exhibits some nice instrumental changes. "Ethereal Night" exudes these same qualities, along with a danceable beat and more of an inspirational feel.
