Thirty years back, a father gave up the six-string and signed up the seven year old for lessons instead.
Michael Gruber has always loved the song craft of great writers like Lennon and McCartney, Greg Brown and Bob Dylan. Born from the drop a needle in the well worn groove of Kottke's Green House and Mudlark he grew as a guitarist under the tutelage of Professors Stropes , Linke and Roller at Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and finally earned his BFA-PG degree in 1996.
His first cd, Yesterday Is Make Believe, is an easy swinging collection of folk with R& B leanings, pop songs and finger-style acoustic artistry with contributions from Biff U. Blumfumgagnge on violin, Lil Rev on harmonica, Peter Roller on dobro and Jeff Ray engineering and producing.
Gruber's involvement in the Madison Scene is checkered and storied. As the original bass player for Jim James and the Damn Shames, he was given the boot for being just too damn shamefully good looking. Picked up later to play and sing in Mark Croft's and Greg Winkler's debut cd releases, tours, and television performances, Gruber now devides time between raising his kids to be rock stars, playing solo and collaborating with jazzy acousticrafty songwriters Andrew Nath and Kris Adams in After School Special.
In the works, a second solo cd and the pop punk garage band Godsdog!
