The musical evolution of Michael Paynter has been a series of obsessive love affairs. At the age of 7 it was the piano, at age 12 it was the guitar, and by the age of 15 he was crashing through a set of drums. July 2010 saw the release of Michael’s debut EP Love The Fall, featuring the fast approaching platinum selling single Love The Fall with guest vocalists Lisa and Jess Origliasso. Now as Michael and his incredible band embark on an Australian national tour supporting Miley Cyrus, Michael releases his latest offering, How Sweet It Is. Michael’s much anticipated follow up single How Sweet It Is was written, produced and mixed by Michael Paynter and was the #1 most added song to radio in the week it was serviced, entered the airplay chart #79 and is available to download on iTunes. Although much has been said about this multi instrumentalist and his 'big' voice, it seems to be the songs, his fine band and his honest and entertaining live shows that are ringing the 'loudest' bells.
"...a voice that captures a room and personality to fill it..." - fasterlouder.com.au
Review of The Inches support show, The Evelyn 18/08/06
"Michael Paynter is that rare type of guy who was destined for glory. Aesthetically, his ability to make a room full of women turn their heads is always amusing. His quiet self-belief is alternated for some 20-year-old humour, but that essentially is part of his magic.
The guy hasn't even made it to his microphone and already hes intriguing.
And then he sings.
Everyone in the pub slowly begins to shut up, and it is a strange feeling to be sitting in a city watering hole and not have your ears assaulted by drunken rants.
The kid can sing. Not just sing, but sing. Like forget everyone else youve ever heard warbling a tune, it 'aint worth trying to remember their names now.
Plus, Michael has some seriously schmick guitar skills. Double plus, hes playing a set of emotive, rock-sexual originals that are an interesting blend of passionate melodies and expressive vocals.
He isn't just singing the songs. Hes recreating the songs emotions right in front of you. He provokes electric atmosphere and takes listeners on a journey that you don't forget. Instead you find yourself at his next gig, and the gig after that, trying madly to get your fill of Paynter's exceedingly unbelievable talent.
Michael Paynter isn't like anything else on the Melbourne music scene. He is quiet unique, wholly himself and ticks all three musical integrity boxes with a big red marker. Writes? Only stuff that you cant get out of your head, that sweeps you up in whirlwind melody and leaves you breathless and heady. Plays Own Instruments? With skill and panache, this guy makes you think he is fingering out fret patterns in his sleep. Sings? I turn my head surreptitiously left and right. I see heads shaking in disbelief at glottal throat roars, smooth effortless vocal gymnastics, crazy-ass high notes, and the general feeling that pub patrons are being stirred into a kind of vocal mocha latte. Smooth, with bite, simultaneously relaxing and energizing, to be enjoyed with friends."
