Too many to list. In no particular order: Billy Joel (how I learned to play in the first place), Yes, Steely Dan, Phil Keaggy, David Wilcox, Bill Evans, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Genesis (Peter Gabriel's, that is), Keith Green, The Yellowjackets, Beck, Elton John, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, many great keyboard composers of the past few centuries whose music I studied and performed (Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Messiaen), the Dave Weckl Band, Rich Mullins, Oscar Peterson, Jellyfish, Matthew Sweet, Take 6, Big Wreck, and I could go on, but that would be silly.

Diversity is the hallmark of composer, writer, arranger and performer Michael Roderick. Michael has crafted an individual sound by a process of weaving together classical structure and jazz idioms with a distinct poetry, both engaging and relevant. His solo recording debut, Open Letters (2006), exhibits that style both through Michael's compositions and directly through his playing. That is, he plays the majority of the instruments on the record.
While being home schooled, Michael studied piano and guitar independently, learning popular music and jazz 'by ear.' At the same time he began to explore classical literature, which grew into a passion he has continually pursued. Michael received his Bachelor of Music in piano performance from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He continued his classical study with Jonathan Bass at the Boston Conservatory and earned a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Central Oklahoma.
While a junior at William Carey College, Michael placed second in the statewide collegiate classical piano competition. In 2008, Michael twice received special recognition with the award-winning UCO Jazz Band I—at the prestigious North Texas Jazz Festival and the historic Wichita Jazz Festival. More recently, he featured two compositions from his upcoming release, Asleep Through 1984, in a Master Class performance with bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and drummer David Anderson.
Michael is married to homemaker, teacher, and visual artist Jen Roderick. While filling the shoes of graduate student, Michael continues to perform and teach privately, and he functions as a Music Director for Grace Bible Church in Oklahoma City. He has been a featured artist at both the University of Central Oklahoma and its extension, The Jazz Lab. He frequently performs at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee and many venues in the Oklahoma City metro area. When he is not performing, Michael has been caught from time to time making a mean Thai red curry paste or studying the Queen's Gambit Declined.
