Michael Stockdale was appointed Director of Contemporary Christian Music and Assistant Professor of Music at Cornerstone University (CU) in August 2007. Michael had been an adjunct professor at CU since 2003. He serves as part of the Worship and Creative Arts Department at Resurrection Life Church (RLC), ministering regularly with worship pastors Ken Reynolds, Curt Coffield and musical director, Bruce Vanderveen. He is also a founding member of the Grand Rapids Guitar Quartet.
English-born, raised and educated, Michael is a graduate of London's prestigious Royal College of Music having studied with Charles Ramirez and Patrick Bashford. Michael began playing the guitar at age 8, and formal training at age 12. He studied with several prominent UK teachers including Graham Wade, John Mills, Julian Byzantine and John Tompkins.
In 1983, Michael gave his life to Christ, came to America and married his bride of 25 years, Joanne. The couple have one grown son, John.
Michael has given numerous performances as a soloist and chamber musician and has been featured on both English and American radio and television. He has performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez with several orchestras. In 1993, he received the Chamber Music America/ASCAP award for adventurous programming.
Before moving to the Grand Rapids area, Michael was the Chair of Music and Director of Detroit’s Institute of Music and Dance (1991-96) and was adjunct faculty at Wayne State University. He was also a regular performer with Detroit’s Lyric Chamber Ensemble.
Aside from his many accomplishments as a classical musician, Michael has been active in Christian Music for over 20 years. In 2003, he performed with Michael English in a special concert benefiting Prison Fellowship. He is a featured soloist on the RLC album “For You I Live” released on the Integrity Label in the fall of 2007. Recently, he played with the RLC band and choir opening for Israel Houghton and New Breed.
