She began taking classical piano lessons when she was 8 years old. During college in the early 1990's, she grew obsessed with many folk singer-songwriter heroines such as Natalie Merchant, Dar Williams, and Ani DiFranco. Their soulful melodies inspired Whiton to try her own hand at writing original songs. She assembled a make-shift recording studio in her student apartment and learned how to create multiple track recordings. Many late evenings were spent at her piano, scribbling lyrics into notebooks and finally singing into a microphone in the depths of her clothes closet. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - She and her cousin Brad Walters, also an aspiring songwriter, recorded a full album of songs (in Walters living room) they had each written in 2000 which was called "Good Enough For Family." The album was the first of many collaborations between Whiton and Walters that ended up widely distributed within the Whiton family and beyond. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In 2001, Whiton decided to attend medical school and finally put her pre-med degree to use. Oddly enough, medical school provided the catalyst Whiton needed to accelerate her songwriting to a new level. Songwriting provided a much needed balance in her life and way to relax. She composed over 25 songs during this time and performed at local coffeehouses and pubs with Brad Walters and other local musicians. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Emerging from the thickets of medical school, Whiton began forging through the dense undergrowth of pre-production in preparation for the studio recording of her first solo album -- all the while adapting to her new role as a first-year resident physician. Produced by Casey Miller (Brad Walters, Ala Zingara, Jam on White Bread) and featuring contributions from a wide range of local musicians, her album, entitled To Be a Noble Gas, showcases Whiton's songwriting skills and prodigious vocal talent. The richness of Whiton's stunning voice often draws a comparison to Natalie Merchant. Her emotional impact, however, is far more reminiscent of Sting or even U2. While even Merchant's upbeat songs are often tinged with an air of melancholy, Whiton maintains a sweet, almost innocently hopeful quality in her music that is communicated even when her subject matter strays into dark territory. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Perhaps Michal's medical background gives her a unique perspective on the range of humanity. Her songs are snapshots that perfectly capture the emotions of a given moment. Love, loss, devotion, tragedy, hope, and redemption. Whiton takes these universal ideals and brings them to life through her own experiences and observations. In this way Michal's songs, though deeply personal, are instantly accessible to listeners who can easily find meaning that relates to their own lives. Whiton's creative and technical sides create a unique wholeness that is making Michal Whiton fans out of listeners and patients alike. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Whiton, now living in Philadelphia, is currently planning a CD release party for her new album, the date has yet to be released.
