Singer/Songwriter Michelle Murray has been playing guitar and composing songs for over 20 years. An accomplished lyricist, her songs combine the sounds of folk, country, and a touch of the blues.
Throughout her years of performing, Michelle has opened shows for popular folk artists such as John Gorka and David Massengill.
She has performed in various venues and festivals in the Washington D.C. area, including the Austin Grill, Jammin Java, Focus Music Concert Series, Caribou Coffee, Mountain Stage New Song Festival, Washington D.C's Fete De La Musique, and the Artomatic Arts Festival in Washington D.C. She has also been a guest on Damien Einstein's show on WRNR-FM
Michelle's CD, "Collection of Songs" received a 2006 Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) "Wammie" nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Recording, and in the same year, the trio she played in, Murray, Crump & Hatley, was nominated for best Contemporary Folk Duo/Group.
Several of the songs on Michelle's CD have received recognition. The song "Married Women" was selected as an Editor's Pick on Washington Post MP3's web site in the summer of 2005. In addition, another song on this CD, "Wandering Heart", won an honorable mention in the October 2005 Song of the Year contest and another song, "Unexpectedly" just won an honorable mention in the June 2007 contest. "Tucker's Song" received airplay on WETA-FM on the Traditions show.
She plays with several area musicians, including Rick Callender and Andrew Coupe in a new trio known as Chapter Three; Rick Kanton & Midnite Bob; and with Greg Vickers in a duo called Only Restin'.
Michelle and Anne Sucher used to perform as a musical duo known as "Water's Edge" and their CD, "Make a Choice" received a 2005 Wammie nomination for best contemporary folk recording. Rick Kanton produced the CD and added music, and Midnite Bob contributed two wonderful songs. Sadly, Anne passed away recently, in February of 2006, but her music will always be remembered.
Michelle currently serves on the board of and hosts an open mike for the Songwriter's Association of Washington. The open mike is now being held at Caribou Coffee in Rockville, MD, on the first and second Fridays of each month. Michelle and Jeff S.host the first Friday open mic, and Tomy Wright hosts the second Friday.
RALLY AGAINST GREED: "Balance The Bucks" Concert in D.C. “Balance The Bucks,” a free concert program to be presented on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is slated for 2 pm Sunday, September 6. The unprecedented musical performance will feature artists from across the country on stage at the Sylvan Amphitheater adjacent to the Washington Monument. The concert will feature a line-up of original tunes focusing on issues such as economic justice, redistribution of wealth, salary disparity, bailouts, foreclosures and the general impact of rampant greed. Event organizer and host Delmark Goldfarb hopes to “try to punch a hole in the cloud of money influence which soothes and smothers the Capitol.” For further details and/or to be a part of the sing-out, contact 503 708 7306; Del.Goldfarb@hotmail.com.
Hey Michelle, register at www.createaconcert.com for FREE to get some college concerts. We're here to help bands like you get way more grassroots exposure.
Let me know if you have any questions, I will personally respond to all myspace messages/wallposts.
We might stop by Mayorga Coffee Company to see you play on Saturday. The festivities go from 6:30 til when? When are you up? We'd love to pop by as we'll be in Rockville that evening!
I'll be there unless I lose my mind... again. (Seems I forget more things these days, since I have so many things vexing me... Don't ask me to explain here, but later is fine.)
I hope to have some interesting new material by then. I'm giving a shot at writing a folk ballad in the old hillbilly vernacular. Maybe it'll be as entertaining to those listening as it is for me to write the story--which has a moral to it... but that's all I'll tell ya' now.
Michelle, Sorry I missed the Caribou OM last week... I somehow got it into my head that it was this Friday. So is it once a month, or every two weeks, or what? I'd like to make the next one if possible.
surreal, I was just getting ready to write you and got a message from you... we are obviously connected and we love you madly... thanks for adding so much to our magical evening in Frederick, you are a treasure indeed... xox Lori & Sandy
Hey Michelle, I miss you and hope you're doing well. We'll have to catch up sometime soon. It's been a bit hectic here. But we did get back recently from a cruise to the Western Caribbean. What fun!
Haven't seen you in quite some time. Last was, I think, at "Mario's"? You gave me a demo of "Ocean City Breeze", on which you wanted my opinion. Very nice for promoting the place, I'd say--if that's what you had in mind. Nice, mellow sort of tune.
I'm at present playing bi-weekly at Joe2 Pizza/Bar in Baltimore, and that's about it, gig-wise. It's a nice place where I'm well appreciated. Doing odd jobs in home-improvement for my day job. Got any work that needs doing?
