(Bio from www.imthesaxman.com)Mickey Bridges was born with a natural gift to play the saxophone. Mickey’s father also played saxophone earlier in his life. He recognized Mickey’s musical ability and purchased a used sax for Mickey to play at the early age of nine. Mickey’s father showed him how to play a few tunes and then agreed to pay for him to take some private lessons. Mickey experienced a lot of difficulty with sticking to the discipline of practicing daily and he eventually quit going. However, Mickey never stopped playing his horn. He continued to play without the aid of formal training other than what was offered in the public school system. The saxophone eventually became a way of life for Mickey. Playing his horn was an activity that he truly enjoyed but he never had any serious hopes of pursuing it as a professional career. Nevertheless, it was and still is a form of therapy for him. Playing his horn became his way of looking at and dealing with his environment and the world. Mickey’s horn continues to be his “door opener” or if you will, his “ice breaker”. He has been invited into, accepted in, and embraced by circles which, under any other circumstances; he probably would have never been invited.
Mickey’s mother was strongly opposed to him becoming a musician. She wanted Mickey to choose a career that held more prestige and financial stability. Mickey was torn between career choices for a good part of his youth. It was only after he finally successfully completed several degrees in areas other than music that he decided to pursue his musical dreams and aspirations.
In 2004 Mickey released his first CD entitled “Inspiration & Reflections.” “Inspiration & Reflections” is a compilation of gospel musical selections that were made popular by other artists. The next project “Facets” plagued Mickey for nearly twenty years and was finally completed and released in the fall 2006. “Facets” consist of all original lyrics and has elements of jazz, old school, R & B, and Rap all fused together. “Mickey’s Mood”, was released in November, 2006 and is a tribute to classic standard love songs that were written and made popular by other artist during the 1960’s and 70’s. Mickey’s next musical contribution entitled: “Step To This” was released in September, 2007. This project is an up tempo soulful jazz project with elements of fusion and blues. In January, 2009, Mickey released his latest musical endeavor entitled “Straight Into the Sunrise”. This project is sure to bring recognition and attention to the fine body of work of someone who has been paying dues for a mighty long time.
