Mike met Buddy Holly and Del Shannon down at his local Youth Club, but when the Beatles came along, it was said that they got a lot from Bob Dylan, (including the hat and the harmonica). Then Mike found out that Bob learned from Woody Guthrie, and he got stuff from Blues legends, so it was down to the record shop to look for Robert Johnson. Then Cream came along, and Eric Clapton was singing Robert J, so Mike found Son House, and the original Sonny Boy Williamson and Sonny Terry. Having found all the sons, Mike went along to his local folk club and discovered all the traditional stuff. Last year he caught up with Martin Carthy, still going strong.
Sounds Like
Traditional English folk music is sung with one finger in the ear, but Mike sounds more like he's got a finger in his nose. The nasal twang might have come from Dylan and the Americans, but the terse language is a poetry all its own. Because he plays guitar, a bit, you might think of other folkies. Please do. It's the message that it's really meant to 'sound like', apart from the twang. And the plink. And the plonk.
Born in Bristol, down in the Delta, the South West of England, Mike made a complete change, and moved to the North West.
Now living in Salford, opposite the poshed-up Quays, and waiting for the BBC to arrive in their new headquarters, Mike is busking for pennies and busting his chops on new songs - some with old tunes.
Back in the '60s, when England was swinging and the Beatles were playing live, Mike was told that 'borrowing', changing words, and adapting, was all part of the Folk Process. That's how the music lives and grows.
Having found his excuse, Mike picked up his guitar, picked up songs from everyone around, and picked up plaudits with his 'new' versions of old songs, and old versions of new songs. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes, like when he played a Billy Ocean number in Swinton Folk Club, it didn't. Guess they hadn't heard about the Process.
Right now he's trying to get in touch with Bob Dylan. He wants to explain to the Bobster what he's done with 'Hattie Carrol'.
