you tell us? it's all been done. we just do this to keep sane in a world gone mad...
A beacon of light in the back-asswards cattle-ranching haven/oil patch known as Alberta, MICO (Johnny Stewart, , Todd Harkness, and Mark Fleischhaker) successfully mix dark yet melodic punk rock with intelligent socio-political insight.
Mico was formed in 1998 by John and Troy in Banff, Alberta, following the dissolution of Johnny's previous band, Red Fisher. Their debut CD "Standing Inside A Shadow" came out on Edmonton label, Does Everyone Stare? in 2001. Mico underwent a series of member and instrument changes following the release of their second album "Outside the Unbearable Grows" (G7 Welcoming Committee) in June 2003, but has solidified the lineup, and is better than ever.
While rooted in punk rock, both in their ideals and musical inspiration, the band drifts into several musical styles in any given song. You're just as likely to find 8 minute long shoegazer-ish compositions as you are 30 second punk songs, and sometimes a combination. The difficulty in pigeon-holing the band means that they are often branded with the misleading "emo" label - something they are less than comfortable with. The key here is melody - each song laden with hooks and burning with energy, yet still managing to maintain an underlying melancholia throughout. Although "the personal is political" label applies here, vocalist and key songwriter Johnny Stewart is also not afraid to cut the shit and say exactly what's on his mind.
The last couple of years has seen MICO garnering critical acclaim while criss-crossing Canada and the United States. They've shared the stage with bands such as The Weakerthans, Strike Anywhere, Propagandhi, Samiam, Moneen, Hot Hot Heat, the New Pornographers and Onelinedrawing.
2005 marks the next phase of the mico odyssey. Troy is overseas's to fall in love, Pat is selling shoes'. that leaves Johnny and Todd(the cod). With Troy's brother Mark filling in on the new record. Which is great as he is a sick drummer. The record is being recorded at Sundae Sound in Calgary, by Al Irving. He is wicked! We also have a cast of other humans playing viloin/key's,pedal steel, etc, our pal Sonya has played some amazing stuff on this record. Check out the new songs posted. look for the new record out in 2006.
all the best.
