cd available here - http://exigentrecords.bigcartel.com/ and http://cdbaby.com/cd/microtia So we got some good reviews:
This is one hot little EP. MICROTIA is one of those bands to keep an eye on for sure. There is some powerful stuff going on here. They’ve got the jumpiness of THE MARS VOLTA yet retain the spiritual vibe of JEFF BUCKLEY. The vocalist is definitely stretching his abilities. Or so it seems. The group hits it on the head with “Architect” opening up the disc and their musical modus operandi is all but defined in one tune. The guitars really start to take off on “Stay Down”, bringing MICROTIA to another level. “Ligature Signature” goes beyond it with some of the most baffling of drum parts. Ripe riffs and guitar harmonies add to the overall picture. Two guitars are put to use in the best possible of ways. I doubt these guys ever play the same chord together. “The Pluto Revival” finds the band layering strings and horns towards the end of the piece. Nice. “Distance Is Oval” is six solid songs clocking in at about 28 minutes. Kind of leaves them wanting more. Know what I mean, jelly-bean?

Microtia - Distance Is Oval, Exigent Records
Named after a deformation of the ear, Portland-based Microtia is exactly that. They seamlessly blend perfectly off-key Aftertaste-era Page Hamilton-like vocals with the bewildering changes of Mars Volta.
You’ll not find a lot of four-on-the-floor rhythms, as swaggering freak outs and angular guitar riffs are the order of the day. Vocal melodies take a back seat to the music to create a signature sound, which may not stick on the first listen. On the second spin, however, you can’t help but be struck by the complexities of it all. While no particular track stands out, this six-song offering has a cohesiveness that’s best when left on repeat.

Microtia = A blues band on speed and acid
Microtia is most definitely the coolest band on Exigent Records by far. These dudes are cool as hell. I was hoping and wishing secretly with all my heart that I would get the opportunity to review their album. Finally, my wildest dreams have come true. Every song is the coolest song of all time. Their music is what Queens of the Stone Age should sound like but don’t have the sweet action to pull it off. The vocals sound like Kirk Kirkwood from the Meat Puppets if Kirk actually had the motivation to step up and get some pipes to belt out the sultry vocal lines heard on these six songs. If I had the power to be impregnated, I would totally have Microtia’s babies. –Jon Robertson

AUGUSTA, GA - When a band’s press kit makes comparisons to groups as far apart on the rock spectrum as Cave-In and Led Zeppelin, I tend to get more than a little skeptical and almost as worried, seeing as how most artists that attempt to reference everything under the sun usually end up a victim of their own exuberance and sheer musical knowledge, each part of the whole rendered so tattered and bastardized that the end result is an incoherent mess of torturously epic proportions.
That’s “Heaven’s Gate” epic, not “Lord of the Rings” epic. Wikipedia rocks my soul.
And so I danced a little mental jig o’ relief when I found Microtia’s “Distance is Oval” opening up with sixty of the most musically interesting seconds I’ve heard thus far in 2008. Pink Floydian organs mesh with earth-gazer guitar sweeps, bass lines hold a steady low-end even as the drums lurch with Cavity-like tempo changes, and the vocals (oh, the vocals) are some of the best that Thom Yorke and Steven Brodsky never laid down.
And yeah, the rest of the album’s pretty freakin’ good too, as the band digs ever deeper into their trick bag, coming up with everything from stoner-friendly bass-drone (“Stay Down”) to knuckle-busting Between the Buried and Me riffing (“Ligature Signature”), and tie it all together with a thunderous pop sensibility presently exceeded only by Torche.
Though, on behalf of Microtia, I resent the comparisons to The Mars Volta (there’s a difference between cerebral and unlistenable), a legitimate case can be made for every other influence these guys list on their MySpace; what’s scary is, they’ve taken very little time to nearly exceed their mentors. This, people, is metalgaze for the educated. Metro Spirit Issue 19.43 :: 05/21/2008
One of the members of microtia has to be from southern California; or, more specifically, San Diego. THey have that distinct late 90's sound that is an equal mix of less spastic GSL acts and ore rock-friendly bands from Gravity Records. In other words, they sound like what happened whn the hardcore kids started smoking pot and discovered Led Zeppelin. Cave-In, Coalesce, and the Mars Volta are great jumping off points, and Microtia do all of them justice: The riffs are heavy, the time changes are bizarre, and the bong is (I'm assuming) never too far away.
