Eluding tidy categorization, Midday Veil draws from an ever-deepening well of influences including sacred and world music, folk, drone, blues, metal, avant-garde, free jazz, new age and krautrock.
The band began as the musical offspring of David Golightly, a classically trained composer and vintage synth freak, and Emily Pothast, a visual artist, singer-songwriter and suspected reincarnation of Hildegard von Bingen. The current lineup also includes Timm Mason (aka Debacle/Aphonia solo artist Mood Organ) on baritone guitar and Chris Pollina on drums and the occasional banjo. Midday Veil has also collaborated, recorded, and communed extensively with multi-instrumentalist Simon Henneman (of Diminished Men and Mt. Non Fiction Records).
PRESS:
"I once saw a sign in a New York City storefront that read "ALL IS BLISS." It was one of the most beautiful—if illusory—axioms I've ever seen. And it just might be Midday Veil's guiding principle. Vocalist Emily Pothast has affinities for country music, soul, and blues, but her alluring earthiness comes equipped with an equally ravishing ethereality, which complements the band's more kosmische tendencies. Throughout Midday Veil's expansive, incantatory psychedelia, analog-synth wizard David Golightly meticulously, delicately coaxes star-dusted oscillations."
"If you ate some mushrooms and wanted to take a spiritual journey, this is the kind of thing you might put on the stereo. ...it would induce one hell of a trip."
End of Time, a limited release CDR documenting the duo phase of the band's history, is SOLD OUT here, although a few copies may be hanging around at Dissonant Plane and Wall of Sound in Seattle.
Two new limited CD releases are coming out in November 2009 under the imprint Translinguistic Other: Queen of the Void, a pagan rock mini-epic recorded last May with Simon Henneman on lead guitar, and Subterranean Ritual an improvised full-length channeled from the cosmic beyond during a single all-night session in September.
Midday Veil has plans to record our first LP at Aleph Studios in early 2010. We are on the lookout for the right label to release this project.
