middx
I started making songs on my laptop in 2003.
I was sampling snippets of violin sampled from classical records and
playing new riffs with them, and also using a lot of 808 drum sounds,
the kind that were being used in Lil Jon records.
I've played guitar since i was a kid, so i started experimenting with
recording guitar riffs but trying to twist and distort them so that they
sounded like a different instrument. Tracks like "Hands Get Dealt" and
"Pick Up The Phone" have a lot of guitar in them. I got into combining
the guitar noises with the samples and with noise. With "Hands Get Dealt" I bounced the track onto an ipod then recorded it back through ipod speakers into my laptop, so it was really noisy and filtered. A lot of the percussion is me doing things like banging a plastic bracelet on a wooden desk, and recording it straight into the laptop using the built-in microphone.
Its turned into an album which is called "Middx", I'm also called Middx.
Only 3 people know i made this record, 2 of whom
worked with me on the visuals. None of my family including the ones i
live with have heard any of it or know i do it, they just know i love
playing guitar and playing on my laptop with my headphones on.
I'm anonymous because i dont want anyone to know my
identity. As i start to collaborate with people Middx becomes something
which isnt just me anyway; thats already happening with the visual side.
The vocal samples in "Pick Up The Phone" and "Got Me Going" are also
really important, the people i've sampled are now a big part of the
project. I love samples.
It will be a great buzz if anyone likes this album, but thats not the point of it. i'm anonymous because i dont want anyone to know my identity. as i start to collaborate with people Middx becomes something which isnt just me anyway; thats already happening with the visual side. the vocal samples in "pick up the phone" and "got me going" are also really important, the people i've sampled are now a big part of the project. i love samples.
Everyone has some sort of secret life, even if its just in their head,
mine is making this music, so its still my fantasy although its real, or
real-ish.
Anonymity feels like freedom to me.
When i was a kid listening to my Dads records, and also when i started listening to pirate radio, i didnt know anything about who had made the music, and thats the feeling I want to re-create.
