Midi Hands it’s a new musical project, a new way to make live set.
The groups uses the last generation of digital interfaces in order to revolutionize the classical position of the musical producer on the stage: he becomes an interactive protagonist for his music and show.
Differently from the traditional concept of live set, here the producers appear no more hidden behind laptops and machines: they show themselves among really simple technolological surfaces, and performes the synth, beat, melody and image through many different and funny musical ‘toys’. The MIDI Hands move these toys really easily …and they can ‘build’ every time a totally unique melody.
The result is a completely envolving multimedial performance, that could be shared with the public from the beginning already. It counts also on a new video device, that develops a normal audio controller into something useful also for the imagines flux’s coordination. In this way the scenography gains a great role inside the performance, so that the show could have a multisensorial effect on the public and location, and the artist could get a live ‘physical’ engagement with the machines.
The team start to work on this project thanks to Reactable that has been developed within the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain by Sergi Jordà, Martin Kaltenbrunner, Günter Geiger and Marcos Alonso.
Midi Hands have implement this technologies with new interface that can be controlled with movement of the “midi-hands” in the air.
This original visual and electro/acustic music instrument offers many different artistic opportunities, and needs the spectators’ active partecipation for the creation of the live performance.
This multimedial project originates as an experiment which was appreciating the analogical character of electro music, through the Midi controller and the movement of the ‘hands’, and became able to re-discover the audio waves’ primal essence.
In the era of tech and communications Midi Hands have create an innovative approach to the music
interacting directly with soundwaves that follows the hands of the player who can transform, reduce
and adapt to their wish and desires. Midi Hands it’s a new experience, a new way of interacting
technologies and human being. The physical approach of M.H. it’s immediatly and make possibile to play the music directly from the hands.
The new interactive surfaces and instruments which compose M.H. overtake the dialectic between usefulness and technological art, and expresses the human being’s concrete potential to become together with sound, video and movement. It becomes in a way possible to perceive all these kinds of impulses together and even to control them in a never ending re-definition and re-creation.
It’s clearly any artist’s best dream, having the possibility to look as his own creation and to listen to it and even to touch it, or also to allow this could be done from the spectator: To save the material dimension of a sound wave and to express the sound potential of one image could be such an experience, that improves greatly the communication between artist and public, on a multisensorial level.
The Team who developed this project counts on a synergy of many different competences: sound engineers, audio/video technics, set designers, videomakers, producers, djs, scratchers and mcs, all take part together in this innovative show.

Midi Hands è una nuova formazione, un progetto innovativo, un nuovo modo di concepire il live.
Il gruppo è partito dal Reactable, risultato di studi in diverse branche della scienza e sviluppato da un gruppo di ricercatori in Music Tecnology diretti dal Dr. Sergi Jordà dell'Istituto Audiovisivo dell'Università Pompeu Fabra di Barcellona. Questo particolare strumento audiovisuale, la cui interfaccia ha la forma di un piano di tavolo, permette l'utilizzo simultaneo da parte di più utenti o performer, che possono interagire muovendo, girando ed accarezzando gli oggetti presenti sul piano luminoso e generare così una serie di suoni grazie ad una serie di complessi e dinamici generatori di suoni, dagli oscillatori ai generatori, con una precisa iconografia visuale associata.
I MIDIHANDS hanno implementato tale tecnologia costruendo un nuovo ed originale prototipo che non necessità più degli oggetti o di un sistema touch-screen per il suo funzionamento ma crea direttamente un’interazione audiovisiva attraverso il movimento delle “mani midi” nell’aria !!
Grazie alle interfacce di ultima generazione il gruppo rivoluziona le posizioni canoniche del palcoscenico offrendo, per la prima volta, ai producers la possibilità di essere protagonisti dello spettacolo e della propria musica.
Diversamente da altri live set la figura del producer non è nascosta dietro oscuri laptop e manopole, affascinanti solo per gli appassionati del genere ed estranei alla gran parte del pubblico, ma diviene centrale e coinvolgente attraverso questi tavoli, eccezionalmente comuni a tutti, con i quali queste “mani midi” interagiscono sviluppando synth, beat e melodie e flussi di immagini.
Il risultato è una performance multimediale coinvolgente sin dalla sua presentazione, da come prende forma, un esperienza unica per il pubblico che incredulo, vede, associa e sente l’energia di questo spettacolo rimanendo così coinvolto da divenire anch’esso parte dello show. Attraverso l’implementazione di questo progetto si è arrivati a catturare non soltanto la parte auditiva ma anche quella visuale, arrivando a costruire una scenografia tale da permettere un totale performance polisensoriale che coinvolge lo stesso corpo nell’interazione fra pubblico e artista uomo e macchina.
Uno strumento musicale visivo ed elettro acustico sul quale possono interfacciarsi ed interagire diverse modalità di espressione artistica in modo trasversale coinvolgendo gli spettatori nella realizzazione stessa del live-performance.
Un progetto multimediale audio/video che va oltre ogni aspettativa evolutosi in un nuovo esperimento, capace di rivisitare il digitale attraverso un controllo misticamente analogico che riporta il suono al suo significato primordiale di onde sonore, sensibili al movimento delle Midi Hands. Nell’epoca in cui il digitale sembra vivere il rapporto tra musica, tecnologia e fruizione, all’insegna del dualismo fra determinismo tecnologico e dimensione umana, M.H. supera questa dialettica esprimendosi nel divenire del suono, nella polisensorialità digitalizzata delle espressioni sonore, visive e fisiche dell’essere umano, nella rideinfinitizzazione analogico-digitale dell’uomo, artista e fruitore, nel suo divenire ascolto, suono e immagine.
Vedere, toccare e far sentire le proprie sonorità e la propria arte è il sogno di ogni artista, il suono espresso tramite la sua fisicità e le immagini descritte anche sonorica-mente aumentano il loro potere comunicativo creando un rapporto diretto fra produttore e pubblico, un polisensoriale sentire condiviso fra i presenti.
Un team di lavoro al completo sviluppa questo progetto che quotidianamente cresce grazie alla sinergia fra le competenze interne al gruppo. Ingegneri del suono, tecnici audio-video, scenografi, videomakers, producers, djs, scrachters ed mc, insieme contribuiscono a questo show sempre più unico ed innovativo.
