Jon Rey (bass)- Jon Rey was born and raised on a ranch outside of Durango, CO within a mile or so either way of Jerry and Abel. Jon was on a road trip with former drummer, Noah, when he purchased his first bass guitar at a Kansas pawn shop. One of the original members of Mesa Badwater, (which would evolve into Midnight Backhand), Jon gives inspiration credentials to the Marshall Tucker Band and Pure Prarie League. Currently inflenced by the Red Dirt genre's pride on original lyrics and gritty country-rock sound, Jon is pleased to be in a band that plays the music game its own way. Jerry Sutherlin (Guitar/Vocals):
Jerry was born and raised in Colorado. When he gets free time, you can find him out hunting or fishing or just enjoying the wild. Jerry first learned the guitar in Texas while attending college, which ironically, round-aboutly, became the downfall of his college days, but the pursuit of something greater. He's been playing and songwriting ever since those days, and found himself smack dab in the middle of a country-rock outfit in the Midnight Backhand, lending rhythm, harmonica and vocals to the gang................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Cletus Nelsen (drums)- Cletus came from the moon. Also a Colorado native, Cletus is fond of the outdoors and the mountains which he calls home. The youngest member of the Backhand, Cletus is also the last one on the bus of the core group. "Filling in the time around the band is Cletus' job. He's the one that makes the train chug down the tracks," according to singer/guitarist Abel Lopez. Abel Lopez has been singing all his life. Raised down the highway from Jerry and Jon, Abel has music in his heart. He spends his most of his nightlife having a good time with friends and sometimes entertaining them with a few tunes. One of the original members of Mesa Badwater, Abel started writing songs and cutting out little tunes on his guitar in his bedroom at home (which would become the place where the Backhand currently practices). Abel's guitar influences come from Big Head Todd's Todd Park Mohr, Neil Young, and Pearl Jam's Mike McCready and Stone Gossard............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
