The 2004 debut album "Back to the Basics" began as an experiment in home audio-recording by band founders Kyle Votroubek and Elliot Diviney. The initial concept was to emulate the sound of late '80s and early '90s rap music through a serious yet fun parody. A frustration with the current state of hip-hop coupled with a nostalgia for artists like MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice brought the artists visions together. Through a heavy use of sampled instruments and prerecorded drum loops, simple rap beats were acheived. After several tries, the band adapted a more traditional "rock band" mentality and sound, and soon shifted to more melody and vocal driven songs. Although the intent was purely comical, common underlying themes of heartache, frustration, and depression plagued many of the album's songs. 6 months later, the follow up album, "On a Lighter Note" was released. With a new appreciation for more advanced recording techniques, a more developed technique on the physical instruments, and a handful of new artists, the band acheived a more sophisticated sound. In response to many complaints and criticisms, the band adopted a more optimistic outlook for the lyrics and made the tracks happier and more "light-hearted." A third album is currently in production.
