Bio
If you’ve heard Mike Adcock’s Lost for words performed by his Last Dance Orchestra (also on 33 Records), you’ll be familiar with his taste for a well-turned melody. Here’s a fresh collection of wistful tunes from Adcock’s pen: this time the mood is darker, but there’s still evidence both of his love of folk music and also his time studying with Gavin Bryars. A subtle Norwegian light illustrates the cover and seems to permeate the music, especially in titles like “Lille julaften” (the day before Christmas Eve), and “Kanada” (Adcock’s favourite ski resort). .. This time the line-up includes violin, guitar and percussion alongside Adcock’s regular piano and accordion, plus the tawny ruminations of Chris Cundy’s bass clarinet and Beth Porter’s cello. Calming but never bland, Adcock has surprises up his sleeve: not least “The Old Year’s” brilliant pairing of melancholy cello with the graceful electronic swoop of Simon Adcock’s theremin. Here the theremin sounds like an eccentric European cousin of the slide guitar. The rest of the album skates around attempts to categorize, and deploys musical intelligence to remain somehow amiable without tumbling into predictability. .. Clive Bell ..
