About Mike Adkins: Bass In The Crowd
Been playing rock since age 17. Attempted to play in elementary band in 5th grade (baritone!) but just could not get the hang of reading music. I felt obligated to play because they gave this test in Mrs. Morris' music class in which they tested your ability to distinguish different pitches (I scored high). Childhood: Tiny Tim, 3 Dog Night, older brothers and lots of their psychedelic albums were my early teachers. Brother Kenny plays good fingerpicking on a classical, my brother Al was a music-head with lots of records and hi-fi equipment. Started playing chords on Dad's acoustic at around 16, in Ohio. Hanging out at the band house of Ab Lucas and Rod Lewis cemented the deal. Moved to Arizona , Dad got me a Fender Mustang (thanks, Dad) and a Radio Shack 20-watt p.a. head hooked up to an old stereo speaker. It was all over. Guitar, bass, drums...then back to bass a long time ago. A lot of projects and songwriting. Love the bass and working in bands. Quick recount of some groups and associations: mentored by the Icard brothers, Darryl and Jeff, in Mesa, AZ awhile after I started playing. Lots of guitar improvs w/ Darryl and technical advice from Jeff (some stuck). Blues jam nights at Long Wongs in Tempe, hosted by Bob E. Baby and the FenderBenders, were great. Seeing the Chili Peppers in a small Tempe club in '87 blew my freaking mind; had never experienced energy like that. Garage/living room/metal/hair bands back in KY (guitar and bass): Toxic Sex Kittens, Charred Flesh, Cow That Loved Me, Vomit (w/ excellent drummer Keith Blake)...had an awesome '76 Fender P-bass stolen by "friends" that were actually scumbags...moved to Murfreesboro TN in '91 (many great players there), played guitar in Earth People, drummed for the legendary Ducttapus (Chris "Jackie" Jackson and John Survant) for about a year. guitar & singer for Hellbilly (Wes White, a darn good rock drummer) for about 4 shows (summer '93), bass for Stranger to the Ground (Michael Dowd, Keith Durham) & Ouster (w/ A.J., bandmates later again in dharmakaya). Couple of shows w/ Brave on bass, then joined up with Shoo Fly Pie in '95; my longest-running band and where I made my biggest learning jumps (Delta Dan Strawser & David Adkins rock it). A few metal shows as a fill-in w/ Sweet Evil. Moved to Nashville in '99 and kept doing Shoo Fly as my main gig. Got to open for one of my heroes, Eugene Chadbourne, at Springwater in 2000 as an improvising guitar w/ drums(David Adkins)... Got into dharmakaya in the summer of '06 (Stacy Fleeman is the wildest, man! And Granny Lawson is the most lethal drummer in town! A.J. smolders on the ax!) Have done some playing with some good writers here as well, like Eric Estok. Great musicians I've met along the way: Jello Biafra (very nice), Dr. Eugene Chadbourne (amazing composer and musical activist), Adrian Belew (also nice). Nashville is great in so many ways, but you feel a bit on the fringes if you're not involved in the pseudo-country music scene, or if you're just not "hip." I tried to talk our singer into it but it was a no go. 4/5ths of the nahdbits are in a new band called Scat Benatar we'd be more than happy to do it. I'll give AJ a call later. - Dave

We're having a benefit concert tomorrow nite 6:30-10 and Saturday from 12 noon to 10 pm.  Try to come over to the church.  We're having a couple cool dramas Sat nite and  as many bands as we can get to come.  We're having an inside & outside stage.  It's short notice, but if you know of any Christian bands that have Friday or Saturday open, please contact me  on myspace or facebook.
We have to come up with a large aount of money  or we will lose our church building.
If you, at one time, attended He Brews as your church home or attended one of our events, please come Friday or Saturday.  We need you!!!   Hope to see you there!
If you could give any size donation it would be greatly appreciated.  If you can't attend or give, please pray for us!!!
