One of the key moments in my life was walking away from my well-paid job with a defence contractor as a new graduate in electronic engineering. What we used to call the Gulf War had just ended - the war between the (US-armed) Iran and Saddam's (US-armed) Iraq. My boss was depressed. Peace was bad for business. Time to go, I thought, or I may end up the same way.
Hitched around France and Spain. Came back and worked for while as an engineer improving the efficiency of diesel engines, then left to do Voluntary Service Overseas in Malawi, Africa. First as a secondary school science teacher, then an engineer for the Ministry of Health. Came back and took at 6 month post at Baby Milk Action - ten years later I'm still here. It's the most satisfying, depressing, infuriating, positive job. Read my blog.
My wife, Sonia, is a Brazilian paediatrician - we met through the International Baby Food Action Network. So we spend some time in Brazil - a wonderful, energetic, harsh paradox of a place.
hello, thanks for continuing to post such informative blogs. I didnt know if you were on FB or not but if so there is a Baby-led weaning group that may benefit from some of your support : ) keep up the good work!
I have been on George Clooney's message board at Imdb. The first message I posted was deleted. I have joined in a thread with a less obvious title (I guess people are reporting ones with the N word in the title?). I posted a link to BabyMilkAction for anyone who wanted to know why people are so angry at George and 'N'.
I'm really not liking this new advert from SMA. It feels like it's advertising the whole brand and showing a small baby too. Plus to me I'm getting the "don't feel guilty to choose to bottlefeed" vibe going on. I think it would encourage a parent to choose formula feeding, "it's not that bad really" kind of thing.
I was in the supermarket today and saw all the baby milks with their newly designed packaging and they are no better than before. Milupa aptamil making claims about "immunofortis". Shocking.
So what do you think about the law being suggested in the UK that will make it possible for companies to be convicted of manslaughter? pretty good i think!
Mike, I've been boycotting Nestle products for many years now. Often I opt for own brands instead, but I am very concerned about who makes them. Do you know of any own brands which Nestle is responsible for?
I hope you are having a good weekend. Keep up the campaigning, one day we might turn things around.
We are having a re-launch at Swans this Wednesday where I DJ...we are moving to our own room upstairs, with our own facilities. It's been something we've been wanting to do for a few years now so do come along and check us out!
Hi Mike
I'm really enjoying your blog- it's a great way for your supporters to follow BMA's work on a day to day basis and build up knowledge and support. It's given me more arguments to present to people when they say "but haven't Nestle cleaned up their act?". Cheers, Kerry F
