I have played with all kinds of musicians in all kinds of different bands, and sometimes I like to play with myself ; )
Bands:
Feedback, Black Market Babies, Fried Fish on the Sidewalk, Johnny Quest, The Great Fishing Expedition, Sallydown Band, The Catfish, Electric Mud, Green Apple Splash, Johnny & the Shenanigans, Stramash, Ribbed For Your Pleasure, Rev. Freddie and Distillers, Hellhounds, The New Boss, Highman and Carbuncle.
I'm proud to say I come from a family of musicians and artists, including my dad, Michael Brunelle Sr, my uncle Phil Brunelle, my cousins Chris Van de Maele and Scotty Brunelle, and Scott's dad, Paul Brunelle.
All of these people are amazingly talented musicians, songwriters, and artists who have won great acclaim and some notoriety for their work. I'm so happy I have all these people in my life, and count them as my friends and inspiration.
Currently I am playing in The New Boss, whose lineup includes:
Jay Davis - Drums and Vocals
Dwayne Errington - Guitars and Vocals
Jason Drury - Guitars and Vocals
I am the newest addition to this group, playing the bass and some backing vocals.
Influences
Blues, Rock, Metal, Punk, New Wave, The Beatles, Bluegrass, Country, and YOU.
I was raised in the 1970's in a very musical and artistic environment. My dad, Mike Sr. was always gigging around Ontario, and his band, The Sallydown Band even released an independent '45 (that's a single on vinyl) in the late 70's. Many of my childhood memories involve musicians, and acoustic guitars being played, lots of Bluegrass, Folk, Rock, and lots of Beatles!
I began learning to play the guitar myself when I was about 13, and wrote a song or two and recorded them on Dad's 4-track when I was 14. I played in some bands throughout my high school years, and during that time made the transition to Bass.
Something about rocking out on the bass made me feel really "cool", i can't put my finger on it to this day what it is exactly, but it's an amazing feeling to hold the groove with a drummer, and really feel the pulse of the band.
In my 20's I played in a three-piece, all original band called The Great Fishing Expedition. We were pretty much local to the London scene, but actually had a small and fiercely loyal following. I still really enjoy some of the songs we wrote and performed together. Members included Rob Fuller, Jeremy Riddell and myself.
Then my cousin Chris Van de Maele, an amazing guitar player, taught me how to chart out songs and their arrangements, and brought me into his band as their new bass player. They were called Green Apple Splash, members included Reverend Freddie, Rob MacEachern, Steve Crew, myself and my cousin Chris. We played steady gigs all over Southern Ontario for a good 4 or 5 years, until I took a sabbatical from gigging to stay home with my newborn baby girl.
Also during this time, I rekindled a childhood friendship with Johnny Wilson, and we founded what was to become the Celtic band Stramash. I have had some of the best times of my musical career playing with Johnny, and played some really interesting gigs.
After about 2 years, I started going a little stir crazy. I wrote and recorded some tunes using my pc at home, mostly acoustic stuff.
Then picked up my bass and could not put it down. I got on the phone with Rev. Freddie, and we started a new band called The Hellhounds, and this was where I met Dwayne Errington, another amazing guitar player. Members included Fred, me, Dwayne, and Jamie Pijeaux.
Dwayne and myself started an acoustic duo, Highman and Carbuncle and we still play every Thursday night at The Spoke pub at UWO. I also joined Dwayne's independent band The New Boss as their bass player. I think the New Boss' songs are great, and I'm proud to be a part of the band.
I do fill-in work with bands as their bass player, and sometimes play some solo acoustic stuff. I love to sing and perform, and I still try to write songs. I love to play Bluegrass, Country, Celtic, and Folk music from around the world. But most of all, I love to Rock Out!
