Mike Clouds is tearing through the tweeter, and wiping out the woofers. This kid just came through and is wrecking everything on your stereo. Don't try to get his attention as he leaves this mess behind, though; he won't listen.
"Blown Speaker Project," Mike Clouds' first solo effort, speaks as if the damage is already done, but that's not the full truth. Reality is, this self-professed "hillkid" from Portland, Maine's rough and tumble Munjoy Hill neighborhood is carving out a path of blown cones in real time. He affirms the albums' destructive potential, "The idea behind this album is the heavy 'war drums,' you know, that ruin speakers with their intensity. Just bangin'!"
Work for the CD came shortly after the completion of the well-received "Life With a Hangover," his most recent offering with partner in grime, A Frame. Together, they painted a picture of life barely holding on to a barstool in a dirty watering hole. With "Blown Speaker," Clouds has shaken off the mental fog and is of a singular focus this time around, "I really just wanted to make a actual old school hip hop album... with meaning." If this is really it, then what is its meaning? Well, for Mike Clouds, it means a chance to stand alone, with no barstool to hold him up; "I can do this on my own. The bangin' beats and everything. Diversifyin' my bonds, yo. Spreadin' that shit out. And you know what? This is my best work yet. No doubt"
"Blown Speaker Project" has been released by Milled Pavement Records and features 15 tracks of classically distorted blown-out hip hop. Guest appearances include: Moshe, A-Frame, nomar slevik, Brzowski, Ghost, 80proof & Mescalano of the Sinistarz, Kristina Kentigian, Saylove!, Bread, Syn the Shaman and more.
Mike Clouds still resides in Portland, not far from the Hill and definitely not far from the last bar he haunted or club he turned on its' ass. He prefers Scotch, but would kill for a cold beer right now.
