David Franks: Walkabouts Verse

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace...

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem sung on myspace... Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans. I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind. I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.” Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen. (C) David Franks 2003

MADDISON

MADDISON

Jan 15 2009 11:56 AM

MADDISON’s fab ‘Slide’ EP is out now on iTunes. We think you’ll love it…but don’t just take our word for it…

“After having done a bit of research on these guys I was pretty impressed to see that they're not doing too bad in the old US of A. Having had their new EP played on various radio stations across the promised land I was intrigued to hear what all the fuss was about, I wasn't disappointed. Their cutting edge rock/indie sound is different to all those other 'indie bands' mixed with Californian cruising melodies and good old British rock and roll, its obvious why this lot are doing well in America. 'Slide' is by far the best song on the album, with its driving rhythms and simple chords, matched with gritty, honest vocals which make you listen to every word. The EP continues to impress with a mixture of styles being incorporated into the tracks, showing the band's ability to keep pushing forward and developing their sound. Surprisingly, America has got it right, Maddison are great!"
Ella Byford, Sandman Magazine

"Incredibly catchy stuff this - taking the melodic nous of Oasis and marrying it to a rockier, blues-driven backing. Damien Maddison's vocals really stand out; raw and raspy without any metal-ish histrionics, he recalls Stevie Ray Vaughan at his crackling best. If they've got a few more instant hooks to match this, Maddison could conquer American rock airwaves with ease."
Channel 4 Television's PlanetSound review of 'Slide'

"Classic rock with double edged harmony and a mighty sly grin. Maddison’s tracks are fully-loaded, indie-pop classics influenced by The Pixies, Dylan and Stone Roses, the latter being a very obvious maker in ‘Rainbow’ with a background saturated in gleaming sunshine. ’Hold Back The Rain’ showcases Damien’s “Neil Finn”-toned vocals in a cheerful, happy anthemic piece."

Hello Mike
For those who have lost
For those who are broken
The Angel has risen
The Angel has spoken
The sun will rise tomorrow
The stars will shine tonight
Keep the love within your heart
Find strength within your light
Take courage on this rocky path
Help those in need and fear
For every twist a challenge brings
And enjoy the coming year
For those who have lost
For those who are broken
Believe in your self
For the Angel has spoken.

Hey you!

Next POETS AND MASH will be...

Monday 20th October
7.30pm
Matt and Phred's, Tib St, Manchester

Your queer vegan poet host DOMINIC BERRY presents brand spanking new Poetry Performance from some of Manchester's rising poetry stars

SHIRLEY MAY
... the legendary star of Manchester's stunning speakeasy night, Shirley May was winner of the North West Poetry Slam in October '99 and then part of the successful North West poetry tour SISTA TALK. As a performer, mentor, poet and spokesperson, Shirley is a true inspiration.

RACHAEL K
... an intensely moving and deep artist, Rachael K has become known as a multi instrumentalist, singer, actress and skilled crafter of words, however this set will be focusing on her exceptionally stirring spoken word works. An exploration of trans identity in the city, this provocative and emotional performance is not to be missed.

MIA DARLONE
... hilarious comic performer coming to POETS AND MASH fresh from her successful show 'Below the Belt', creator of such characters as Cockney Rhyming Slag and the flirty therapist, Mia's work is very funny and very insightful. Quickly building a strong reputation across both the comedy and poetry circuits, a show from Mia will always entertain.

Proving Art and Entertainment can be one, POETS AND MASH is an evening of love, laughter and lyrical language. Artists already established on Manchester's thriving poetry circuit take new work to a new night that examines and explores the depths of city lives. Expect a stimulating yet accessible marrying of page and theatre.

POETS AND MASH presents to you some of the most exciting spoken word artists in Manchester today.
Not to be missed!

All the kids outside my house are waiting for something to happen, they've got a smokers cough at six months pregnant, They're hurring up because they'll be late for school and exams are the key to being so cool. Shall we go to the school disco and really let our hair down? Let's flirt with all of the teachers because nobody's around. We can dance under a moonlit sky in Alexandra park and be lit up by reflections off shopping trollys in the resoviour. If I asked you to take a chance on the ugliest kid in the town would you only say yes when none of your mates are around?

Hope you enjoyed my poem mike I'm using them for lyrics in a new song, I've been writing more stuff and I'm getting into it.
