GeeR, is currently an Art teacher in the Austin Independent School District. Back in the day he use to stay down in the basement of his parents house and play his guitar for hours and hours. This use to make the neighbors angry. The interest in guitar began while on a two week school visit to Jamaica as a teenager. "We were there in Jamaica as part of a missionary team to help poor and sick children". "After seeing their conditions and visiting local churches I saw how much music helped these people through their daily struggles". While on the trip GeeR got his hands on one of his chaperones guitars and he was hooked. He use to hang alone in the dorm room to try and learn power chords. Shortly after GeeR's return to the states GeeR's father bought him his first guitar. His mother, a former pianist and music teacher, taught him how to understand music and appreciate the art of sound.
While attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, were GeeR was studying to be an illustrator a personal revelation about songwriting and performing began. It was at S.C.A.D were GeeR met and became friends with the Multi Grammy Award Winner India Arie. He was fortunate to play a few open mic nights with her and play bass as her back up a few times. GeeR recorded three songs with India in Savannah GA and he still holds the original copies today. "I just remember India telling me how beautiful my skin color was and to be proud of my dark skin".
In 2001 GeeR was living in New York City when the 911 catastrophe occured. “I saw the second plane hit, and I dropped to the ground”. The trauma stopped GeeR from playing music. However in 2005 India Arie performed in south Jersey and GeeR attended the concert. "The concert was on a small stage in Atlantic City, it was very intimate. I got right up to the stage and India pointed to me and called me out from the stage, "Mike right", she said. Hearing that the spark to write and perform was re-ignited".
Since then GeeR has run into Damon Dash, the music producer for Jay-Z and André Leon Tally the editor at large of Vogue magazine. Both of which gave GeeR the time and effort of opportunity. “These two men taught me the importance of persistence and the reality of making it in the art world”.
GeeR has put many miles on his pick-up truck, traverling and playing in several states. He also has played in several band arrangements. " The band thing just has not worked for me". Along the way he has recorded four CD’s, “Are You Your Skin”, “The River”, “Neverland” and “ GeeR 2009”. GeeR is working on a new set of songs for his fifth CD witch is currently entitled "Tapes". A lot of the songs performed on this CD will be old song coming off his first hand-held tape recordings, recorded back in Savannah GA in the early 90's. "I think I wrote better back then, those songs still feel so good to my soul".
