Artists I listened to throughout the years for influence and inspiration would be Kiss, Rush, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Buddy Rich, Frank Zappa, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Yes, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Spinal Tap, Steely Dan, Metallica, Fear, Living Colour, Faith No More, Primus, Fishbone, Mr. Bungle, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pantera, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Sabbath, Terry Bozzio, The Beatles, Miles Davis, System of a Down, The Beach Boys, Judas Priest and Tenacious D
I was born into a musical family in 1969. My mother played guitar, keyboards and sang in a band that played clubs, weddings and other private parties. At age 4 I was playing on the floor along to music with drumsticks laying around the house. By the time I was 7 I would accompany my mother to gigs and she would hand me a tambourine to play or some other percussion instrument. I would always watch the drummer intently and began figuring out things he was doing. My parents bought me my first Slingerland drumset when I was 10; soon after I was filling in gigs when the drummer couldn’t make it. I am mostly self-taught, although I had maybe 3 months worth of lessons when I was 11; additionally, I played in the school orchestras and marching band. Between ages 15 – 19 I played in the family wedding band full time, and afterward began playing in local rock bands. Over the years I played in various cover bands playing gigs both big and small, classy and not so classy; I would also fill in with a road show type of band that played a lot of fairs and corporate functions, a valuable experience since I had to learn to play to a click track. In my late 20’s I played in an original, jam/rock/world music type of band called Mystery Van, along with my sister Misti Donahower, who also plays drums and percussion. I soon began doing recording session work, playing on jingles and for a wide array of artists/styles. All of this background was perfect training for when I was introduced in 2004 to amazing rock singer Miljenko (Michael) Matijevic, singer from the band Steelheart and also singing voice of actor Mark Wahlberg in the movie Rock Star; he was looking for a drummer to help him begin work on demos for some new songs he had written, for his forthcoming album. We hit it off, and I ended up recording drum tracks for both the demos and the album itself. Miljenko released some of these new tracks on an EP called Just A Taste, and a new version of Steelheart with me included did a brief east coast tour in Nov 2006 to promote. Additionally, we lit up the stage at the Rocklahoma festival in Pryor, Oklahoma twice in July 2007 and 2008, along with acts like Queensryche, Twisted Sister, UFO and Ace Frehley. The new album Good 2B Alive was finally released on November 11th, 2008, and kicks fucking ass. When not involved with Steelheart I perform in the infamous east coast rock cover band Fuzzy Bunny Slippers, although over the last several years I have played in just about every situation imaginable (excluding death metal and country), ie lounge and wedding band gigs, 12 piece horn/funk bands, straight up jazz performances, and being a member of the Long Island-based Judas Priest tribute band Xciter. I continue to do session work when I can find it and give private lessons.
