Michael Merlucci

1942 - 2007..

I am saddened to report that artist Michael Merlucci died at his studio/loft apartment in Brick Twp, NJ on August 4th, 2007 after a long struggle with emphysema and heart disease. He was 65 years old.

Aveva 65 anni.

Born and raised in Newark, NJ, Michael Merlucci later moved, and spent the rest of his life at the Jersey Shore, living just a few miles from the ocean. He dedicated his life to painting and many other artistic endeavors. He was involved in a number of artistic projects with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and was a member of the Ocean County Artists Guild. He also met regularly with a small group of local artists to share inspiration, ideas and creative works.

Michael's creative spirit lives on in a lifetime collection of paintings, multi-media collage, drawings, sculptures and creative writing.

Merlucci lived very close to the beach and as a result, his artwork is very influenced by the eternal ebb and flow of the ocean. His collection includes many seascapes, and even the ones with turbulent waves, have a peaceful quality to them.

Merlucci's early works made spectacular use of color and his collection includes a number of vibrant flower paintings.

The collection also includes a vast array of self-portraits from across his lifespan.

Spirituality pervades many of Merlucci's works. Although many of his paintings demonstrate specific religious themes and symbols, a number of works, using perfect circles reflect a universal spirituality and unity of the cosmos.

Mike Merlucci - "A Beacon of Creativity"

"With intense energy driving concentrated layers of paint or with great restraint and spare strokes, this artist speaks through humor, whimsy, passion, and pain. His years of work are a visual biography of experience, constantly translated into color, shape, line, mass and texture. Playfulness pervades, heightening the haunting sadness and profound suffering that underline many of his works."

-Katy S (artist & friend)

-Katy S (l'artista & l'amico)

Michael painted primarily with acrylics on primed masonite. He felt that the various styles of his paintings often represented struggles with the polarities of reason and emotion.

"In the 60's, my work was very emotional....those were turbulent times."

In his own life, he often felt a struggle between the art world and materialism. He often found himself inspired by The Bible and "a good documentary" which depicts living conditions in impoverished countries.

"It makes me appreciate what I have....I am still growing, changing, and learning."
