Mike's Blurbs |
About me:
I started programming in 1976, back in the days when a user-friendly interface meant a new ribbon in the card punch machine. I've done a lot of work since then writing communications programs and drivers to interface hardware to the rest of the software. I'm currently unemployed after the device driver jobs went overseas along with the hardware design and manufacturing.
My fifteen minutes of fame came in 1984 when I wrote and ran a bulletin board on a Commodore Vic-20. It had multiple rooms (message areas), private mail and an online game, all in 9.6K of Basic. Users could start their own rooms and make them public or private. It was very popular. I ran it on the Vic for six months then rewrote it in Turbo Pascal and ran it on a 4.77 MHz PC clone with one 360K floppy drive, no hard disk and 384K of RAM (I couldn't afford the full 640K) for a year and a half.
I live in a two bedroom flat with a big garden out the back. It's not supposed to be a big garden - it's supposed to be a small garden - and will be a small garden again one day when I finish weeding it. Or instead of pulling out weeds and putting in flowers, I could just paint the weeds different colours. Maybe I could learn how to do that at one of those landscape painting courses ;-)
I am a lapsed motorcyclist with a slowly deterioriating 1986 Suzuki GSX250. I used to ride to work every day until my boss told me to get a car so I bought a small Suzuki with a three-cylinder 800cc engine. It was a quick little car but I couldn't show it to anybody because, as soon as they got in, it slowed down.
I'm currently driving a 1300cc Daihatsu Charade which I bought new ten years ago. It's been very reliable and gets 40 mpg around town but I'm still looking forward to the day when I can afford to buy a car that can go up hills with the air conditioning on. My dream car is a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette.
