Mike's Blurbs |
About me:
I started programming in 1976, back in the days when a user-friendly interface meant a new ribbon in the card punch machine. I've done a lot of work since then writing
communications programs for telephone companies, EFTPOS terminals and networks followed by embedded programs for a cell phone base station, an air traffic control system and medical equipment. I'm currently unemployed.
My fifteen minutes of fame came in 1984 when I wrote and ran a bulletin board on a Commodore Vic-20. It had multiple rooms (message areas), private mail and an online game, all in 9.6K of Basic. Users could start their own rooms and make them public or private. It was very popular. I ran it on the Vic for six months then rewrote it in Turbo Pascal and ran it on a 4.77 MHz PC clone with one 360K floppy drive, no hard disk and 384K of RAM (I couldn't afford the full 640K) for a year and a half.
My first car was a small Suzuki with a three-cylinder 800cc engine. It was a quick little car but I couldn't show it to anybody because, as soon as they got in, it slowed down.
I'm currently driving a 1300cc Daihatsu Charade which I bought new thirteen years ago. It's been very reliable and gets 35 mpg around town but I'm still looking forward to the day when I can afford to buy a car that can go up hills with the air conditioning on. My dream car is a 1971 Chevrolet Corvette.
