Interests

  • General

Film, painting, the occult - you know, the usual.
  • Music

I'm going back in time these days - find myself listening more and more to The Stranglers (first band I ever played on my little toy record player), The Stones, The Who, Acca Dacca (have now visited Bon Scott's grave in Fremantle) and of course the delights of '80s synth pop, particularly Human League.
  • Movies

A wide range but here's some faves: Anything by Ozu, Antonioni, Hitchcock, Dreyer, Rossellini, Tarkovsky, Bergman, Feuillade, Cronenberg, Kiarostami, Bunuel, and Michael Powell. Also, Blade Runner, Sergio Leone's Westerns, John Carpenter's The Fog and The Thing, Jacques Tourneur's horror movies, The Wicker Man, Woody Allen - all these got me into movies in the first place. Finally, I've got to mention Spirit of the Beehive, Fritz Lang's M, Walerian Borowcyzk, Forbidden Planet, Anthony Mann's westerns with James Stewart, Tabu, 2001, Salo, L'armee des ombres and Jia Zhangke. Guilty pleasure: Sense and Sensibility with Kate Winslet
  • Television

Dr Who (old and new), old-style interviews (Face To Face), The Prisoner, Columbo, Dennis Potter and Alan Bleasdale, Ghost Stories at Christmas, Peter Watkins docs, anything by Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin
  • Books

Currently reading Philip K Dick. Have just finished Third Edition of Strange Attractor, a journal on unpopular culture - the weird, forgotten, off-the-beaten track. Favourite authors - Ballard, Dickens, Angela Carter, Jose Saramago (the best modern writer), Mervyn Peake, Arthur Machen. Shakespeare and Dante's Divine Comedy reign supreme, though.
  • Heroes

From childhood - Tom Baker, Clint Eastwood. Others - Edgar Allan Poe, David Cronenberg, Donald Crowhurst, Joseph Wright.

About me:

Hi, I'm Mike from West London (originally from Notts). Currently working as a subtitler of movies and TV progs for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. I also write film criticism - you can find my reviews and features at www.close-upfilm.com and my articles on British documentaries (Words For Battle, the 80 Days and Western Approaches) at the rather wonderful BFI Screenonline site. I can also provide a Tarot reading if you're very nice.
