About me: Whether in front of or behind the camera, Mikela Jay’s eclectic career has been anything but predictable. As a self-taught multidisciplinary artist she continues to gain worldwide attention via independent and mainstream theatres, television, DVD and the Internet.
Leaving school and home at 15, she was first introduced to editing, producing and shooting at a rural cable-TV station, instilling a strong work ethic and understanding of process which continues to inform her work.
Model agencies hounded her, launching a career that would span the globe for over a decade (1987-2000). Appearances on fashion runways and in billboards, advertising, commercials, magazines such as ‘Elle’ (Greece/France/Japan); ‘Fashion’ (Canada); ‘Flare’ (Canada); ‘Marie Claire’ (Japan/Greece), and covers (‘Cosmopolitan’ France), have allowed her to work with some of the most creative teams in the industry.
Beginning in 1997, diverse guest-star and leading roles in film and television have seen her as futuristic pop-diva; astronaut; FBI agent; heroine addict; burlesque dancer; 1930’s courtesan; 1950’s religious wife and mother; as well as the last descendant of Nostredamus. Appearances on hit shows such as ‘The L Word’ (Showtime/Tony Goldwyn); ‘No Night is Too Long’ (BBC/Alliance Atlantis/Tom Shankland); ‘Bliss’ (Gala Films/Lynne Stopkewich); ‘Living With The Dead’ (CBS/Stephen Gyllenhaal): ‘Outer Limits’ (Helen Shaver); ‘Brotherhood of Murder’ (Martin Bell); ‘Millennium’ (Thomas J. Wright); ‘Daybreak’ (Tucker Gates); & ‘Futuresport’ (Ernest Dickerson) have proven her reputation as a gifted chameleon.
Mikela’s flexibility to adapt to various mediums is highlighted in her work on one of the most successful Canadian feature documentaries ever made, ‘The Corporation’. Hired to assist director/producer Mark Achbar (‘Manufacturing Consent’), she was immersed in post-production for close to a year to help condense a then 12-hour assembly to a 3-hour miniseries, as well as festival & theatrical edits. Mikela collaborated with ‘The Corporation’s’ other producers, editors, graphics & sound design crews, and did numerous temp voice-overs. This unconventional role earned her an unconventional credit: Achbar anointed her ‘Creative & Organizational Catalyst’, which was one of her on-screen credits. Achbar also cast her as the film’s narrator and DVD promo voice. Winning 26 awards, 10 of them audience awards (including Sundance), ‘The Corporation’ was released theatrically in more than 20 countries, grossed over six million dollars at the box office, and sold over 150,000 DVDs. More than a million people have downloaded the film via Youtube, bittorrent, and other P2P networks. It is used in thousands of high school classes, university courses and corporations.
Mikela continues to keep her finger on the pulse contributing to a wide range of projects as documentary writer, creative consultant/producer, editor and videographer for music videos and independent short films.

It's 3:04, you've spent all night reading Kerouac and Ginsberg, smoking French cigarettes and wearing your essential black and white beat poetry ensemble. As a lazy shuffling drom beat brushes into your personal soundtrack what else can you do but get on the road? Laid back beat jazz rhythms from the ever fascinating British film crew Hum-Drum Films and Miles To Go.
Mikela, besides having a rather pretty name, your biography is quite an inspiring read. I can only hope to be so lucky to have a life as accomplished as yours.
